Role Responsibilities

Texana Café seeks interns who have an appetite for a career in culinary work to work in our restaurant in Fulshear, Texas. This is a great opportunity for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities who are seeking employment experience in a supported setting. Our mission is to make and serve exceptional quality food and drink while supporting meaningful employment for neurodiverse individuals. We believe that with the right training and support, individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities have limitless possibilities. This opportunity is ideal for individuals with Autism or a Developmental Disability who would like support and training in employment skills to then find meaningful long-term employment in the community. Texana Café is open Tuesday-Saturday 8:00am-3:00pm.

The Café Intern works as part of a restaurant team with daily supervision from a BCBA or designee. The Café Intern provides hospitality services to customers dining in the restaurant or shopping for retail items. This includes providing exceptional customer service, preparing food, serving food, packaging food, completing cleaning routines, and assisting customers with retail items. Training for this position consists of skill acquisition for communication, social skills, and other vocational skills necessary to complete job duties in the community setting. Training includes specific training in essential duties related to food preparation, food serving and retail sales as well as training in accepting and responding to feedback from supervisors.

Interns will be responsible for preparing a wide variety of cafe food items such as coffee, sandwiches, and salads and prepare a variety of baked goods such as cakes, cookies, and candies following recipes. Serve customers, package orders, and complete cleaning protocols. Key responsibilities include:

  • Adhere to health and safety standards (training provided)
  • Maintain an orderly cooking station
  • Create meals and desserts
  • Decorate baked goods
  • Monitor stocks for ingredients such as bread, cheese, flour, sugar etc.
  • Check quality of material and condition of equipment and devices
  • Complete cleaning protocols in assigned areas to maintain a clean kitchen and café.
