What are Interior Interns?

Interior Interns are students or recent graduates who work under the supervision of professional interior designers to gain practical experience in the field. They assist with tasks such as creating design presentations, sourcing materials, preparing drawings, and coordinating with vendors. This role helps interns develop essential skills and industry knowledge, often serving as a stepping stone to a full-time interior design position. Interns also have the opportunity to build professional networks and portfolios during their internship.

What do interns do in interior design?

Interior design interns assist with tasks such as creating design layouts, selecting materials and furnishings, preparing presentations, and conducting research. They often use design software like AutoCAD or SketchUp and gain hands-on experience by supporting senior designers on projects.

How does an Interior Intern typically collaborate with senior designers and other team members on projects?

As an Interior Intern, you will frequently work alongside senior designers, architects, and project managers to support various stages of the design process. This collaboration often includes assisting with research, preparing presentation materials, sourcing finishes and furnishings, and participating in design meetings. Interns are encouraged to contribute creative ideas while learning from feedback and observing how experienced professionals manage client expectations and project timelines. This teamwork provides valuable exposure to real-world workflows and helps interns build essential communication and organizational skills.

Is $30 an hour good for an intern?

For an interior intern, earning $30 an hour is considered above average, as most internships in design and related fields typically pay between $15 and $20 per hour. Higher pay may reflect specialized skills, a competitive market, or a paid internship with additional responsibilities, but it is generally a strong rate for an internship position.

How do I get an interior design internship?

To get an interior design internship, candidates should build a portfolio showcasing their work, gain relevant skills in design software like AutoCAD or SketchUp, and apply to firms or companies that offer internship programs. A background in interior design courses or related education can improve chances, and strong communication skills are also valuable in this field.

Is $20 an hour good for an internship?

For an interior intern, $20 an hour is generally considered a competitive rate, especially for entry-level positions that may involve tasks like assisting with design projects, drafting, or client communication. Internships often pay less than full-time roles, but rates can vary based on location, company size, and required skills such as proficiency in design software like AutoCAD or SketchUp.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an Interior Intern, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Interior Intern, you need a foundational understanding of design principles, space planning, and proficiency in drafting, often supported by a degree or coursework in interior design or architecture. Familiarity with design software such as AutoCAD, SketchUp, and Adobe Creative Suite is typically expected, along with knowledge of building codes and materials. Strong communication, teamwork, and a keen eye for detail are standout soft skills in this role. These skills and qualities are essential for assisting senior designers, translating concepts into workable plans, and ensuring successful project execution.
