What does an Interactive Designer do?

An Interactive Designer creates engaging digital experiences by designing user interfaces, interactive elements, and visual layouts for websites, apps, and multimedia projects. They use tools like Adobe Creative Suite and work closely with developers to ensure functionality and aesthetic appeal, often requiring knowledge of user experience (UX) principles and coding skills. Their role involves combining creativity with technical understanding to enhance user engagement and usability.

Is UX replaced by AI?

As an Interactive Designer, AI tools can assist with tasks like prototyping and user research, but they do not replace the need for human-centered UX design. UX professionals focus on understanding user needs, creating intuitive interfaces, and applying empathy, skills that AI currently cannot fully replicate. AI serves as a complement to UX work rather than a replacement.

What Is an Interactive Designer?

An interactive designer creates and redesigns websites and software products to make them engaging, dynamic, and user-friendly. As an interactive designer, you develop creative solutions that combine form and function and may perform a range of duties, such as creating navigation components, designing interactive elements, and ensuring consistency across the interface. You may also work with a team of other staff members and clients, and help with the actual implementation or creation of prototypes. To pursue a career as an interactive designer, you typically need experience in interactive web design and a portfolio of relevant work samples. You also need to understand programming and design software, such as Photoshop and CSS, along with industry concepts like user interface design and user experience flows. Some employers may also require a degree in a design-related field. Additional qualifications include strong creativity, communication, and problem-solving skills, as well as the ability to implement art direction and work as part of a team.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an Interactive Designer, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Interactive Designer, you need a strong foundation in visual design, user experience (UX) principles, and proficiency in design tools, often supported by a degree in graphic design or a related field. Expertise with software such as Adobe Creative Suite, Sketch, Figma, and prototyping tools like InVision is typically required. Creative problem-solving, strong communication, and collaboration skills help you effectively translate ideas into engaging digital experiences. These skills ensure that interactive designs are both aesthetically pleasing and highly usable, leading to successful user engagement and project outcomes.

What are Interactive Designers?

Interactive Designers are professionals who create engaging digital experiences by combining graphic design, user interface (UI) design, and user experience (UX) principles. They focus on how users interact with websites, apps, or other digital products, ensuring that these interactions are intuitive, enjoyable, and effective. Their work often involves designing wireframes, prototypes, and visual elements while collaborating with developers, product managers, and other stakeholders. Interactive Designers play a crucial role in making digital products user-friendly and visually appealing.

How much do interactive designers make?

Interactive designers typically earn a median annual salary of around $70,000 to $85,000, depending on experience, location, and skill set. Entry-level positions may start lower, while experienced designers with proficiency in tools like Adobe Creative Suite and coding skills can earn higher salaries or freelance rates.

How does an Interactive Designer typically collaborate with developers and other team members during a project?

Interactive Designers work closely with developers, UX researchers, and product managers throughout the project lifecycle. They often participate in brainstorming sessions, present design concepts, and adjust prototypes based on feedback from cross-functional teams. Regular communication and iterative feedback are key, as Interactive Designers translate creative ideas into interactive experiences that are technically feasible and user-friendly. This collaborative environment fosters innovation and ensures the final product meets both user needs and technical requirements.

How to become an Interactive Designer?

To become an Interactive Designer, develop skills in user experience (UX), user interface (UI) design, and proficiency with design tools like Adobe XD, Sketch, or Figma. A relevant degree in graphic design, computer science, or a related field is often helpful, along with building a portfolio of projects and gaining experience through internships or freelance work.

Job description

Groove Jones is seeking a Lead or Senior UI/UX Designer to help create the next generation of immersive and interactive experiences across VR, web, and emerging platforms.

Groove Jones is an award-winning creative technology studio that designs and builds interactive experiences for brands, products, and audiences. We partner with clients to create work that blends storytelling, design, and technology across digital platforms.

This is a hands-on UX/UI design role for someone who can bring clarity to complex experiences, create polished UX and UI in Figma, and help carry ideas from concept through implementation. The ideal candidate combines strong interaction design, systems thinking, visual design, and practical technical fluency across web and VR/XR workflows.

Beyond creating exceptional designs, they should be comfortable using AI-assisted development tools, rapid prototyping platforms, and light front-end development ("vibe coding") to build functional prototypes, test ideas, and accelerate product development. They will work closely with developers and, when needed, contribute directly to front-end prototyping to help teams move from concept to production more efficiently.

Local to Dallas / Fort Worth, Texas preferred, not required.

What Youโ€™ll Do

  • Lead UX/UI design for interactive products and branded experiences across web, VR, and emerging technology platforms.
  • Create user flows, wireframes, information architecture, interface systems, and high-fidelity designs in Figma.
  • Design intuitive experiences for technically complex, multi-step, or spatial interactions.
  • Collaborate closely with creative directors, strategists, producers, developers, 3D artists, and client stakeholders from concept through launch.
  • Translate ideas, business goals, and technical requirements into clear, usable, visually compelling experiences.
  • Build rapid prototypes to test concepts, communicate UX intent, and accelerate team alignment.
  • Contribute to front-end implementation and design-to-development handoff with a practical understanding of how experiences get built.
  • Use AI-assisted workflows and โ€œvibe codingโ€ approaches to quickly explore, prototype, and validate design directions.
  • Help define UI systems and interaction patterns that work across platforms, including web and immersive environments.
  • Present design rationale clearly to internal teams and clients, incorporating feedback without losing the core experience vision.

What Weโ€™re Looking For

  • 6+ years of experience in UI/UX, product design, experience design, or interactive design; Lead-level candidates should bring clear ownership experience across projects and teams.
  • Strong portfolio showing shipped digital work across web, interactive product, immersive, or emerging technology experiences.
  • Advanced Figma skills, including wireframing, prototyping, component systems, high-fidelity UI, and presentation-ready design communication.
  • Experience designing for both web and VR/XR environments.
  • Strong understanding of interaction design, UX systems, interface hierarchy, responsive behavior, and usability best practices.
  • Ability to think conceptually and execute practically, from early flows to polished UI.
  • Comfort with front-end collaboration and implementation, including prototyping or building portions of the experience directly.
  • Familiarity with HTML/CSS and modern front-end workflows; additional experience with JavaScript, React, WebGL, or related tooling is a strong plus.
  • Experience using AI-enabled tools or lightweight coding workflows to prototype and iterate quickly.
  • Strong communication skills and a collaborative, low-ego working style.

Nice to Have

  • Experience with immersive learning, simulation, branded activations, or real-time interactive products.
  • Familiarity with WebGL, Three.js, React, Unity, Unreal, or spatial UX patterns.
  • Experience designing for Apple Vision Pro, Meta Quest, or other immersive platforms.
  • Ability to work across UX strategy, interface design, and front-end experimentation without over-specializing too narrowly.
  • Experience in agency, innovation studio, or client-services environments.
