An interactive designer creates and redesigns websites and software products to make them engaging, dynamic, and user-friendly. As an interactive designer, you develop creative solutions that combine form and function and may perform a range of duties, such as creating navigation components, designing interactive elements, and ensuring consistency across the interface. You may also work with a team of other staff members and clients, and help with the actual implementation or creation of prototypes. To pursue a career as an interactive designer, you typically need experience in interactive web design and a portfolio of relevant work samples. You also need to understand programming and design software, such as Photoshop and CSS, along with industry concepts like user interface design and user experience flows. Some employers may also require a degree in a design-related field. Additional qualifications include strong creativity, communication, and problem-solving skills, as well as the ability to implement art direction and work as part of a team.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an Interactive Designer, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Interactive Designer, you need a strong foundation in visual design, user experience (UX) principles, and proficiency in design tools, often supported by a degree in graphic design or a related field. Expertise with software such as Adobe Creative Suite, Sketch, Figma, and prototyping tools like InVision is typically required. Creative problem-solving, strong communication, and collaboration skills help you effectively translate ideas into engaging digital experiences. These skills ensure that interactive designs are both aesthetically pleasing and highly usable, leading to successful user engagement and project outcomes.

What are Interactive Designers?

Interactive Designers are professionals who create engaging digital experiences by combining graphic design, user interface (UI) design, and user experience (UX) principles. They focus on how users interact with websites, apps, or other digital products, ensuring that these interactions are intuitive, enjoyable, and effective. Their work often involves designing wireframes, prototypes, and visual elements while collaborating with developers, product managers, and other stakeholders. Interactive Designers play a crucial role in making digital products user-friendly and visually appealing.

Is UX a dead field?

User Experience (UX) design is an active and evolving field that remains essential in creating effective digital products. UX designers focus on user research, interaction design, and usability testing, often using tools like Figma or Adobe XD, and the demand for these skills continues to grow as companies prioritize user-centered design.

How does an Interactive Designer typically collaborate with developers and other team members during a project?

Interactive Designers work closely with developers, UX researchers, and product managers throughout the project lifecycle. They often participate in brainstorming sessions, present design concepts, and adjust prototypes based on feedback from cross-functional teams. Regular communication and iterative feedback are key, as Interactive Designers translate creative ideas into interactive experiences that are technically feasible and user-friendly. This collaborative environment fosters innovation and ensures the final product meets both user needs and technical requirements.

How to become an Interactive Designer?

To become an Interactive Designer, develop skills in user experience (UX), user interface (UI) design, and proficiency with design tools like Adobe XD, Sketch, or Figma. A relevant degree in graphic design, computer science, or a related field is often helpful, along with building a portfolio of projects and gaining experience through internships or freelance work.

What do interactive designers do?

Job description

Description:

We're a 2025 Netty Award winner for Best Multidisciplinary Design โ€” and we're looking for the next creative force to help us keep raising the bar.

This role is built for a designer who can do it all โ€” stunning large-format print, fluid motion graphics, and compelling video content โ€” and who thrives in a fast-paced environment where every project is different and the work actually ships into the real world.

THE OPPORTUNITY

Culton Companies designs and builds award-winning trade show exhibits, branded commercial interiors, and museum environments for clients across the country โ€” and the visual content our designers create is a big part of what makes those spaces unforgettable. We're looking for a Multimedia Graphics Designer to join our creative team and help us tell powerful brand stories through print, digital, motion, and interactive media.

This is a fast-paced role where no two projects are the same. You'll work across large-format print graphics, digital signage, motion graphics, video content, and interactive displays โ€” and you'll see your work shipped out and installed in real environments, not just published to a feed.

WHAT YOU'LL DO

  • Design visually compelling large- and mid-format print graphics, informational panels, and display imagery โ€” and prepare files that are print-ready to spec
  • Animate and edit motion graphics and video for digital signage, interactive displays, and client presentations
  • Develop design solutions that bring brand stories and narratives to life across both static and motion formats
  • Manage multiple active projects simultaneously, balancing creative quality with production deadlines
  • Collaborate with the design team, sales staff, and clients to understand goals and translate them into effective visual solutions
  • Maintain a consistent, high standard of creative vision across every deliverable

WHAT YOU BRING

Required:

  • Degree in Graphic Design, Visual Communications, Multimedia, or a related field
  • A strong portfolio demonstrating excellence in both graphic design and motion graphics/video
  • Advanced proficiency across the Adobe Creative Suite โ€” specifically:

? Photoshop

After Effects

?? Illustrator

? Premiere Pro

InDesign

  • Experience designing for mid- and large-format print, informational graphics, and interactive content
  • Ability to manage multiple projects and adapt fluidly to shifting priorities
  • Strong communication and collaboration skills; team-oriented and comfortable presenting work

Bonus Points For:

  • Experience designing for physical environments โ€” exhibits, museums, branded interiors, or similar
  • Background in interactive content design or touch-screen interface development
  • Motion design experience beyond standard transitions โ€” 3D elements, character animation, or complex compositing

SCHEDULE & COMPENSATION

  • Full-time, salaried position โ€” Monday through Friday, 8:00 AM โ€“ 5:00 PM
  • Competitive salary based on experience and potential
  • Based at our Trussville, Alabama headquarters facility

THE PERKS

We take care of the people who bring the creative vision:

Health, Dental & Vision

401K Retirement Plan

Paid Parental Leave

PTO + 7 Paid Holidays

? AFLAC & Liberty National

FSA Plan

Online Payroll Access

Quarterly Employee Events
