What is an insurance underwriter?

Insurance underwriters evaluate insurance policy applications, assess the risk, and make recommendations for coverage and premium pricing to insurance issuers. As an insurance underwriter, you use computer software and specific criteria to assess risk and establish pricing and research other factors such as market trends and equity values to provide data to support your recommendations. You determine if the policy will likely be a good financial investment for the insurance provider.

What does an insurance underwriter do?

An insurance underwriter evaluates applications for insurance coverage and determines the level of risk involved in insuring a person or asset. They review information such as application forms, medical records, and financial documents to decide whether to offer insurance and at what premium rate. Underwriters play a crucial role in helping insurance companies set appropriate coverage terms and minimize potential losses. Their work ensures that the company remains profitable while providing fair and accurate coverage to clients.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an insurance underwriter?

To thrive as an Insurance Underwriter, you need strong analytical skills, attention to detail, and a solid understanding of finance and risk assessment, often supported by a bachelor's degree in business, finance, or related fields. Familiarity with underwriting software, risk management systems, and relevant certifications like Chartered Property Casualty Underwriter (CPCU) is typically required. Excellent communication, decision-making, and negotiation skills help underwriters explain policies and collaborate effectively with agents and clients. These skills are vital for accurately assessing risk, ensuring profitability, and maintaining strong client relationships in the insurance industry.

What are some common challenges insurance underwriters face in balancing risk and customer satisfaction?

Insurance underwriters often face the challenge of assessing risks accurately while maintaining competitive offerings that satisfy clients. Striking the right balance can be difficult, as being too cautious may result in lost business, while being overly lenient can lead to unprofitable claims. Underwriters must stay current with industry trends, regulations, and risk assessment tools, and they frequently collaborate with agents and actuaries to ensure sound decisions. Effective communication and analytical skills are essential to navigate these competing demands and to help build long-term client relationships.

Job description

Executive Underwriter - UW07CD
Senior Underwriter - UW08CA
We're determined to make a difference and are proud to be an insurance company that goes well beyond coverages and policies. Working here means having every opportunity to achieve your goals - and to help others accomplish theirs, too. Join our team as we help shape the future.
At The Hartford, we help people achieve amazing things by protecting what matters most. As a Construction Underwriter, you'll be at the heart of that mission-joining a team known across the industry for delivering tailored solutions for complex construction risks, including programs with loss sensitive and alternative risk financing structures.
What You'll Do
As a Middle & Large Business Construction Underwriter, you'll lead the sales and underwriting process for complex construction accounts. You'll partner closely with agents, brokers, and internal stakeholders to deliver sustainable, profitable solutions.
Your role will include:
  • Leading underwriting and pricing strategy for complex construction risks, including loss-sensitive and structured programs
  • Managing account stewardship, renewal planning, and retention strategies
  • Evaluating loss experience, risk controls, and insured financials to support loss-sensitive decision-making
  • Driving strategic planning and operational excellence across your portfolio
  • Identifying cross-sell and up-sell opportunities across casualty and related lines
  • Collaborating with a high-performing, results-oriented team in a shared-success culture

What Sets This Role Apart
  • Exposure to loss-sensitive construction programs and complex risk structures
  • A seat at the table with underwriting, product, actuarial, and sales leadership
  • A culture that values innovation over tradition
  • Career growth aligned to your goals-technical leadership or people leadership
  • A collaborative, inclusive environment where your expertise and perspective matter

We'll Be a Good Match If You Have:
  • Experience underwriting complex construction casualty risks, including or adjacent to loss-sensitive programs
  • Strong analytical and critical-thinking skills, particularly when evaluating loss history and risk characteristics
  • Financial acumen and sound underwriting judgment
  • A customer-first mindset with a collaborative, relationship-driven approach
  • Ownership mentality with consistent follow-through
  • Adaptability in a dynamic, evolving marketplace
  • A desire to learn and grow within Middle & Large Business underwriting

Qualifications
  • 3+ years of construction casualty underwriting experience preferred
  • Prior commercial construction carrier underwriting experience required
  • Proven success building internal and external partnerships
  • Excellent communication, negotiation, and presentation skills
  • Strong organizational, analytical, and decision-making abilities
  • High-energy, entrepreneurial mindset with resilience
  • Travel: 25%-30% to neighboring states
  • Valid driver's license (company pool car may be provided)

Note: Final position title and level will be determined based on the selected candidate's qualifications.
Work Arrangement
This role offers a Hybrid work arrangement:
  • Candidates are expected to work at our Hartford office Tuesday through Thursday if they are not in-market.
