Nurse Intern, ER Bellevue: PRN

Summary:

A nurse intern will be engaged in a structured internship program to gain practical experience in clinical settings while under the supervision of a nurse. A nurse intern may participate, perform and engage in any and all aspects of the associated licensure they are seeking (LPN or RN) under the direct supervision of their assigned precepting nurse. A nurse intern may perform activities within the scope of unlicensed personnel without direct supervision of a precepting nurse.

What You Will Do:

  • Participates in the orientation program as directed by the nursing unit/education team.
  • Adhere to facility policies, procedures, and standards of care.
  • Maintain patient confidentiality and adhere to HIPAA regulations.
  • Actively engage in learning opportunities, including clinical experiences, training sessions, and seek guidance from licensed nursing staff when appropriate.
  • Document patient care accurately and timely under the direct supervision of a preceptor.

Preceptor Responsibilities

  • An RN must be identified to precept the nurse intern seeking RN licensure. An LPN or RN may precept a nurse intern seeking LPN licensure.
  • Review nurse intern documentation.
  • Direct supervision of any and all care provided by the nurse intern outside of the scope of unlicensed personnel.
  • Continually assess competency of the nurse intern and provide constructive feedback for improvement.
  • Facilitate a safe learning environment that promotes open communication.
  • Provide consistent feedback of the nurse intern to unit director/education team.
  • Co-sign all medications administered by the nurse intern.

Nurse Internship Duration and Scheduling:

  • Nurse intern program will last until licensure is obtained or otherwise directed by unit director.
  • Once licensure is obtained unit orientation will be continued as a licensed RN or LPN.
  • The nurse intern will maintain a minimum of 24 hours worked per month to allow for flexible scheduling around academic obligations. Once licensure is obtained they will be held to the hourly work requirements of the accepted position.

The following may not be performed by a nurse intern:

  • Co-sign medication administered by a licensed nurse or nurse intern.
  • Witness controlled substance waste.
  • Initiate or document restraints.
  • Administer medications without a co-signing nurse.
  • Perform/document physical assessment upon admission.
  • Participate, perform or engage in any practice that requires a nursing license without the direct supervision of the precepting nurse.

What You Will Need:

  • RN or LPN student who has completed a minimum of one year with one semester of clinical coursework.
  • Must verify passing grade in clinical coursework.
  • Must have affiliated college/school complete and verify nurse intern competency checklist.
  • BLS
