HHM Talent is assisting a client in their search for a Controller in Chattanooga, TN.


Position Overview

We are seeking an experienced and detail-oriented Controller to oversee the day-to-day accounting operations for an established homebuilding company. This role will manage a small accounting team and serve as a key financial partner to the CEO, providing accurate, timely, and real-time financial information to support business decisions.

The ideal candidate is a self-starter with strong technical accounting skills, understands reconciliations and month-end close processes, and is comfortable working in a fast-paced construction or homebuilding environment. This person will be responsible for maintaining the integrity of the company's financial data while providing clear visibility into budgets, cash flow, expenses, forecasting, and overall financial performance.


Responsibilities

  • Manage and oversee the day-to-day accounting functions and supervise a team of three accounting professionals.
  • Lead and manage the month-end close process, ensuring financial information is accurate and delivered on a timely basis.
  • Prepare and post journal entries, accruals, adjustments, and other accounting transactions.
  • Perform and oversee bank, credit card, balance sheet, and other account reconciliations.
  • Reconcile vendor accounts, investigate discrepancies, and ensure accurate vendor balances.
  • Prepare and review weekly, monthly and quarterly financial statements and reports.
  • Provide the CEO with clear, concise financial reporting and insights, including real-time reports that provide an accurate view of the company's financial position.
  • Monitor company budgets and provide updates on spending and financial performance.
  • Assist with annual budgeting and long-range financial planning.
  • Monitor financial activity related to homebuilding projects, including job costs, vendor expenses, and project budgets.
  • Review project financials and identify cost overruns, discrepancies, or unexpected expenses.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field preferred; CPA license preferred.
  • 5+ years of progressive accounting experience, with experience managing or supervising accounting staff.
  • Strong understanding of general ledger accounting, reconciliations, journal entries, and month-end close.
  • Experience preparing and analyzing financial reports.
  • Strong budgeting and forecasting experience.
  • Ability to analyze financial data and communicate findings to executive leadership.
  • Excellent attention to detail and organizational skills.
  • Strong Excel skills and proficiency with accounting/ERP software.
  • Ability to work independently, prioritize multiple deadlines, and identify issues before they become problems.
  • Strong communication skills and the ability to explain financial information to non-financial stakeholders.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in homebuilding, construction, real estate development, or another project-based business.
  • Experience with job costing and project-level financial reporting.
  • Experience utilizing AI tools to build reports and streamline financial forecasts.
