Position Summary
The Controller is responsible for directing the day-to-day accounting operations of a large multispecialty healthcare organization with approximately $300 million in annual gross revenue. The Controller ensures the integrity of financial reporting, maintains strong internal controls, oversees accounting compliance, and manages all general accounting functions. The Controller works closely with operational leaders and finance leadership to ensure accurate financial information is available for organizational decision-making while supporting regulatory compliance and audit readiness.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Accounting Operations
  • Manage all accounting functions including:
    • General ledger
    • Accounts payable
    • Accounts receivable
    • Payroll accounting
    • Fixed assets
    • Cash management
    • Month-end and year-end close processes
  • Ensure accurate and timely recording of financial transactions.
  • Maintain accounting policies and procedures.

Financial Reporting
  • Prepare monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements.
  • Ensure compliance with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP).
  • Produce management reports and financial analysis.
  • Support department leaders with budget-to-actual reporting.

Internal Controls & Compliance
  • Maintain effective internal controls across all financial processes.
  • Monitor financial activities to ensure compliance with organizational policies.
  • Support compliance with healthcare-related financial regulations.
  • Assist with preparation of tax filings and required regulatory reporting.

Audit Management
  • Coordinate annual external financial audits.
  • Serve as primary liaison with external auditors.
  • Prepare audit schedules and supporting documentation.
  • Implement recommendations resulting from audits and reviews.

Budget & Financial Analysis Support
  • Assist with annual budgeting and forecasting processes.
  • Support financial performance analysis and variance reporting.
  • Participate in special projects and operational improvement initiatives.

Cash Management
  • Monitor daily cash activity and banking relationships.
  • Assist with cash flow forecasting and liquidity management.
  • Reconcile bank accounts and oversee treasury-related activities.

Leadership & Staff Development
  • Supervise accounting staff.
  • Establish performance expectations and development plans.
  • Promote accounting process efficiency and continuous improvement.

Qualifications
Education
  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting required.
  • CPA designation strongly preferred.
  • Master's degree in Accounting, Finance, or Business preferred.

Experience
  • Minimum 7-10 years of progressive accounting experience.
  • Minimum 3-5 years in a management role.
  • Healthcare accounting experience preferred.
  • Experience with large physician practices, healthcare systems, or ambulatory healthcare organizations preferred.
  • Experience managing organizations with revenues exceeding $100 million preferred.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Strong knowledge of GAAP and financial reporting requirements.
  • Thorough understanding of healthcare accounting principles.
  • Experience with payroll accounting and provider compensation accounting.
  • Advanced proficiency with healthcare financial systems.
