Venteon Finance is currently seeking an experienced Assistant Controller for a leading retail company located in the metro Detroit area. This position will manage the daily operations of the Accounting department and provides analytical expertise and participates in other accounting projects as assigned.
Requirements of the Assistant Controller
  • Degree in Accounting or Finance with
  • 7 plus years of experience in a leadership role.
  • Retail experience a plus.
  • Strong knowledge of GAAP.
  • Expert in developing and maintaining accounting procedures and accounting controls.
  • Able to wear many hats and prioritize workflow according to demands.
  • Strong leadership skills; Attention to detail, ability to collect and analyze information, problem-solve, confidentiality, and make decisions.
  • Experience with ERP Systems, data mining, modeling and analysis.
    Strong MS and Access Officeskills.

Responsibilities of the Assistant Controller
  • Responsible for leading the following accounting operation functions:
    • Financial Reporting/Analysis
    • Accounts Receivable
    • Accounts Payable
    • Fixed Assets
    • Internal Store Audit functions
    • Sales/Use Tax, Property Tax Returns Compliance
    • Local/State/Federal income tax work papers and disbursements
    • All outside financial and tax audits and compliance
  • Responsible for mentoring, managing and evaluating a team.
  • Set priorities for the department and guide process using technical accounting expertise.
  • Prepare accurate financial statement and reports in accordance with GAAP.
  • Prepare monthly Income Statement/Balance Sheet variance analysis and reconciliations and record necessary closing entries accurately and timely.
  • Prepare accurate monthly, quarterly and annual management reports.
  • Assist CAO with income tax work papers and disbursements for several companies.
  • Actively provide hands on day-to-day oversight for timely compliance of the high-volume accounts payable function.
  • Oversee all financial and sales/use tax external audits as primary contact for auditors to insure timely, accurate completion.
  • Lead initiative to update all written accounting policies, internal controls and procedures.
  • Drive continuous improvement initiatives by identifying and correcting inefficiencies.
  • Develop standardized analytical tools/templates/reports for the accounting team using financial queries, v-lookups and pivot tables.
  • Establish best accounting practices for the department that serve and support over 60 multistate stores and departments.
