Executive Insurance Controller information

What is an executive insurance controller?

Executive Insurance Controllers are senior financial professionals who oversee the accounting, financial reporting, and regulatory compliance functions within an insurance company. They are responsible for managing budgets, ensuring accurate financial statements, and implementing internal controls to safeguard company assets. Additionally, they work closely with executive leadership to develop financial strategies, assess risk, and ensure the organization adheres to industry laws and regulations. Their expertise is vital for maintaining the financial health and integrity of the insurance company.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an executive insurance controller?

To thrive as an Executive Insurance Controller, you need expertise in financial management, insurance accounting, regulatory compliance, and typically a bachelor's degree in finance, accounting, or a related field, often accompanied by CPA or similar certification. Familiarity with financial reporting software, insurance management systems, and advanced Excel skills is crucial. Strong analytical thinking, leadership, and effective communication are key soft skills that set top performers apart. These competencies ensure accurate financial oversight, regulatory adherence, and strategic decision-making essential for organizational success in the insurance industry.

What are some common challenges faced by executive insurance controllers when managing cross-departmental financial reporting?

Executive Insurance Controllers often need to coordinate financial data from multiple departments, such as claims, underwriting, and compliance. One common challenge is ensuring consistency and accuracy across diverse data sources, which may use different systems or reporting standards. Building strong relationships and clear communication channels with department heads is essential to streamline data collection and resolve discrepancies quickly. Proficiency in insurance-specific accounting regulations and financial software also helps address these challenges effectively.

Job description

Our client is a well-established and growing organization seeking an experienced Controller to join its leadership team as part of a planned succession strategy. This is an exceptional opportunity for a proven Controller who is ready to take the next step in their career and develop into a Chief Financial Officer within the next 2–3 years.

The organization is intentionally hiring at the Controller level to allow the incoming leader to learn the business, build relationships across the organization, assume increasing strategic responsibility, and ultimately transition into the CFO role.

The ideal candidate will already have Controller-level experience and a strong foundation across accounting, finance, and business operations. While the initial focus will be on leading the accounting and finance function, the role will progressively expand into broader financial and strategic leadership responsibilities. Over the next 2–3 years, the successful candidate will work closely with the current leadership team to gain a deep understanding of the business and prepare for the CFO transition.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead and oversee the day-to-day accounting and finance functions, ensuring accurate and timely financial reporting
  • Manage, mentor, and develop the accounting/finance team
  • Oversee month-end and year-end close processes and financial statement preparation
  • Develop and manage annual budgets, forecasts, and cash flow projections
  • Provide leadership with financial analysis, reporting, and recommendations to support business decisions
  • Establish and monitor key financial and operational performance metrics
  • Partner with leaders across the organization to improve profitability, efficiency, and financial performance
  • Strengthen internal controls, accounting policies, and financial processes
  • Identify opportunities for automation, process improvement, and increased financial visibility
  • Manage banking, insurance, tax, audit, and other external financial relationships
  • Participate in strategic planning and long-term business initiatives
  • Progressively assume broader responsibilities spanning finance, operations, and overall business strategy
  • Work closely with the current CFO/leadership team as part of a structured succession plan
  • Ultimately assume full CFO responsibilities, including strategic financial leadership and executive-level decision support

For immediate consideration call Jimmy Tunney at 517-657-8054

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field
  • Current or recent Controller-level experience
  • Strong understanding of accounting, financial reporting, budgeting, forecasting, and cash flow management
  • Experience leading and developing an accounting/finance team
  • Strong business acumen and the ability to connect financial results to operational performance
  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Experience partnering with senior leadership and providing financial guidance
  • A hands-on, collaborative leadership style
  • Strong communication skills and the ability to build relationships throughout an organization
  • A demonstrated desire to take on increasing responsibility and ultimately serve as a CFO
