What does an Instructional Design Program Manager do?

An Instructional Design Program Manager oversees the development, implementation, and evaluation of educational programs and training materials. Their responsibilities often include collaborating with subject matter experts, managing budgets, and ensuring the quality and effectiveness of educational content. This role requires strong leadership, project management, and communication skills.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an Instructional Design Program Manager?

To thrive as an Instructional Design Program Manager, you need expertise in instructional design methodologies, adult learning theory, project management, and typically a degree in instructional design, education, or a related field. Familiarity with learning management systems (LMS), authoring tools like Articulate Storyline or Adobe Captivate, and project management software is essential. Outstanding communication, leadership, and organizational skills help manage cross-functional teams and collaborate with stakeholders. These skills are crucial for developing effective learning programs that meet organizational goals and deliver measurable outcomes.

Instructional Design Program Managers frequently serve as liaisons between subject matter experts, project stakeholders, and the instructional design team. They coordinate meetings to gather requirements, clarify learning objectives, and ensure that course content is both accurate and aligned with organizational goals. Effective communication and project management skills are essential, as they must balance SME input with best practices in instructional design and ensure timely delivery of learning solutions.
