What is an inside sales position?

An Inside Sales Position involves selling products or services to customers primarily through phone calls, emails, or online meetings, rather than face-to-face interactions. Inside sales professionals typically work from an office or remotely, focusing on generating leads, following up with prospects, and closing sales using digital communication tools. They often collaborate closely with other departments, such as marketing and customer support, to ensure a smooth sales process and build lasting customer relationships. This role requires strong communication skills, a good understanding of the product or service, and the ability to build rapport with clients remotely.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an inside sales representative, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Inside Sales Representative, you need strong communication skills, persuasive abilities, and a foundational understanding of sales processes, often supported by a bachelor's degree or equivalent experience. Familiarity with customer relationship management (CRM) software, sales automation tools, and basic data analysis is typically required. Outstanding candidates excel in relationship-building, resilience, and active listening to identify and address client needs. These skills drive revenue growth, foster customer loyalty, and enable effective management of sales cycles in a competitive environment.

What are some common challenges faced in an inside sales position and how can they be overcome?

Inside Sales professionals often encounter challenges such as reaching decision-makers, handling rejection, and maintaining motivation in a fast-paced environment. To overcome these, successful reps focus on building strong relationships through personalized communication, utilize CRM tools to track and prioritize leads, and continuously refine their sales pitch based on feedback. Collaborating closely with marketing and field sales teams can also help align messaging and improve lead quality. Regular training and setting achievable goals are key strategies for staying resilient and achieving consistent results.

Job description

At Maverik, we don’t just offer jobs, we offer adventures.

As an Inside Sales Representative, you’ll play a key role in growing Maverik’s commercial fleet business by identifying new opportunities, building relationships, and helping businesses find the right fueling solutions for their needs. You’ll own the sales process from prospecting and discovery through negotiation, closing, onboarding, and account growth, working with small to mid-sized commercial fleets. If you’re a driven, consultative sales professional who enjoys building relationships, winning new business, and seeing the impact of your work, this is an opportunity to make a difference while helping Maverik fuel what’s next.

Why this role matters

This role directly contributes to Maverik’s commercial growth by bringing in new fleet customers, increasing fuel volume and revenue, and building long-term customer relationships. By expanding Maverik’s commercial fleet business, the Inside Sales Representative helps strengthen our customer base and supports the continued growth of our commercial sales organization.

Location/Schedule

This role is based at our Salt Lake City Headquarters and follows a hybrid schedule with four days in-office and one remote day each week.

What You’ll do in this Role

    • Generate new commercial fleet business through outbound prospecting, inbound lead follow-up, email campaigns, referrals, and other sales activities.
    • Build and maintain a qualified pipeline of prospective customers within assigned markets or territories.
    • Identify customer business and fueling needs and recommend fleet card, fuel discount, reporting, card control, and account management solutions.
    • Manage opportunities throughout the sales cycle, including prospecting, discovery, solution development, proposal, negotiation, closing, and onboarding.
    • Achieve established sales goals, including new accounts, fleet card activations, fuel gallons, revenue, margin, and other key performance measures.
    • Develop relationships with business owners, fleet managers, operations leaders, and other key customer decision-makers to support retention and account growth.
    • Monitor customer activity and market trends to identify opportunities for additional fuel volume, account expansion, improved retention, and competitive positioning.

Duties and responsibilities, as required by business necessity may be added, deleted, or changed at any time at the discretion of management, formally or informally, either verbally or in writing. Scheduling and shift assignments and work location may be changed at any time, as required by business necessity.

You’ll be a great fit for this adventure if you have:

    • High school diploma or GED required.
    • Demonstrated experience prospecting, developing, and closing new business opportunities.
    • Experience managing a sales pipeline and working within a CRM platform.
    • Strong sales, business development, consultative selling, negotiation, and relationship-building skills.
    • Effective verbal, written, and presentation skills with the ability to influence customer decisions and build trust.
    • Results-oriented with the ability to achieve established sales, revenue, margin, and growth goals.
    • Strong organizational, problem-solving, and analytical skills with the ability to manage multiple customers and priorities in a fast-paced environment

Bonus points if you also bring:

    • Bachelor’s degree in Business, Marketing, Sales, or a related field preferred.
    • 2+ years of inside sales, business development, account management, or customer-facing sales experience preferred.
    • Experience selling fleet cards, fuel programs, payment solutions, loyalty programs, transportation services, or other B2B solutions preferred.
    • Experience within commercial fleet, fuel management, convenience retail, transportation, or a related industry preferred.
    • Proficiency with CRM platforms and Microsoft Office applications; Salesforce or similar CRM experience preferred.

    Compensation & Benefits

Pay Range: $70,000–$75,000 base salary, DOE, + commission opportunities

The above salary range represents a general guideline; however, Maverik considers a number of factors when determining base salary offers, such as the scope and responsibilities of the position and the candidates experience, education, skills, and current market conditions.

    Benefits Include:

    • Full Health, Dental, and Vision Package with company contribution to cost
    • In-Store and Fuel Discounts
    • Retirement plan with company match (401K)
    • Eligible for the annual incentive bonus program
    • Profit Sharing: When Maverik succeeds, so do you. Team Members are eligible for annual profit sharing—our way of recognizing the important role you play in our success
    • Comprehensive Paid Time-Off Policy, along with additional perks and benefits
