Job description

VMWare Infrastructure Engineer

Work Location: 100 Community Pl, Crownsville, MD 21032. This position follows a hybrid work schedule (work remotely up to 3 days per week).

Interview Mode: Virtual via MS Teams

The client is seeking a VMware Infrastructure Engineer who will be responsible for implementing and maintaining a highly available, secure, and resilient enterprise virtualization environment supporting our state client. This individual will play a critical role in ensuring operational stability across VMware-based infrastructure platforms, supporting production systems that require strict uptime, security, and disaster recovery standards. While familiarity with the skills listed is important, the candidate needs to be highly proficient in Windows Server operating system vulnerability remediation. The client has an existing patching team, but the resource must be able to resolve issues when automated OS patching fails.

Responsibilities
  • Log Analysis: Expert-level parsing of CBS.log, DISM.log, and WindowsUpdate.log (via PowerShell).
  • Servicing Stack Knowledge: Deep understanding of Component-Based Servicing (CBS) and the WinSxS folder.
  • Repair Tool Mastery: Advanced use of DISM (including /RestoreHealth with external sources) and SFC utilities.
  • PowerShell Scripting: Ability to automate the resetting of the Windows Update Agent and clearing the SoftwareDistribution cache.
  • Environment Management: Proficient in Tanium
  • Storage & Partitioning: Troubleshooting disk space issues within the System Reserved Partition and Volume Shadow Copies.
  • Security Interoperability: Identifying conflicts between the Trusted Installer service and EDR/Antivirus agents
  • Enterprise Virtualization Management
    • Administer and manage large-scale VMware environments, including VMware vSphere and VMware vCenter Server
    • Design, configure, and maintain ESXi hosts, clusters, and resource pools
    • Optimize virtual infrastructure performance, capacity, and scalability
  • High Availability & Disaster Recovery
    • Implement high-availability (HA) and disaster recovery (DR) solutions aligned to RPO/RTO requirements

Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, Engineering, or related field (or equivalent experience)
  • 7+ years of experience in enterprise infrastructure engineering
  • 5+ years of hands-on VMware experience (vSphere, vCenter, ESXi) in large-scale environments
  • Deep expertise in: VMware vSphere, vCenter, and ESXi administration, HA/DR architectures (SRM, replication, backup platforms), Enterprise storage systems (SAN/NAS, vSAN, replication technologies)
  • Strong working knowledge of: DNS, DHCP, IPAM, TCP/IP networking, VLANs, and segmentation, Windows Server and Linux operating systems
  • Experience with: Backup and recovery tools (e.g., vRanger, Azure Backup or similar), Monitoring and performance tuning tools
  • VMware certifications (VCP, VCAP, or equivalent)
  • Experience supporting state/local government or regulated environments
  • Familiarity with: NetApp or enterprise storage platforms, Cloud integration (AWS, Azure hybrid environments)
  • ITIL or comparable operational framework certification
