What is an independent manufacturer representative?

Independent Manufacturer Representatives, also known as independent sales reps or manufacturers' agents, are self-employed sales professionals who represent one or more manufacturers to sell their products to wholesalers, distributors, or retailers. They typically work on a commission basis and are not direct employees of the companies whose products they represent. These representatives leverage their industry knowledge and existing relationships to help manufacturers expand their market reach, especially in new or underserved territories. They often handle multiple non-competing product lines and provide valuable feedback from the marketplace to the manufacturers.

How does an independent manufacturer representative typically manage relationships with multiple manufacturers and clients simultaneously?

Independent Manufacturer Representatives often juggle several product lines from different manufacturers, requiring strong organizational and communication skills. They must ensure that each manufacturer's products receive appropriate attention, avoid conflicts of interest, and keep up with distinct sales targets or reporting requirements. Regular updates, transparent communication, and robust CRM systems are essential for tracking progress and maintaining productive relationships with both manufacturers and clients. This dynamic environment rewards professionals who are proactive, adaptable, and skilled at balancing competing priorities.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an independent manufacturer representative, and why are they important?

To succeed as an Independent Manufacturer Representative, you need a solid background in sales, product knowledge, and industry-specific expertise, often supported by experience in business development or account management. Familiarity with CRM software, sales analytics tools, and product training certifications is typically required. Strong negotiation, communication, and self-motivation skills help you build and maintain client relationships and manage your territory effectively. These competencies are crucial for driving sales growth, meeting targets, and fostering long-term partnerships in a competitive market.

Job description

Regional Sales Manager - Northeast

Industry: Electrical Power Distribution | Circuit Protection | Distributor Channel

Territory: Northeast U.S. Greater New England through portions of the Mid-Atlantic, i.e. Boston, Rhode Island, Connecticut, Northern VA

Compensation: $120,000 - $140,000 Base + 25% Target Bonus (30%+ Stretch) + Company Vehicle + Gas Card

The Opportunity:

We're seeking a Regional Sales Manager to lead sales growth throughout the Northeast region by developing electrical distributor partnerships, supporting manufacturer representative agencies, driving strategic account development with industrial OEM’s, and identifying new opportunities across the electrical power distribution market. You'll join a globally recognized manufacturer whose products are specified into critical electrical infrastructure projects across commercial, industrial, utility, renewable energy, OEM, and mission critical applications.

If you've spent years building relationships within electrical distribution and want greater market influence, stronger compensation, and a seat at the table with both distributors and manufacturer representatives, this could be the next step in your career. This role is highly visible within the organization and offers significant autonomy.

Why is this worth a look?

First off, this is not an opening created by turnover. The individual previously in this role was promoted, creating an opportunity for someone to step into an established territory with existing distributor relationships, strong manufacturer representative coverage, and significant runway for growth.

What You'll Be Doing:

  • Grow revenue throughout the Northeast territory through electrical distribution and manufacturer representative channels.
  • Drive specification and project opportunities involving circuit protection, power management, surge protection, and related electrical solutions.
  • Develop strategic relationships with distributor leadership, branch managers, manufacturer rep agents, sales teams, and key decision makers at OEM's.
  • Partner closely with established rep agencies to maximize territory coverage and market penetration.
  • Conduct joint sales calls, distributor trainings, product launches, and market development activities.
  • Identify emerging opportunities across commercial, industrial, utility, OEM, infrastructure, and renewable energy markets.
  • Support channel partners in winning projects and expanding market share.

What We're Looking For:

  • Willingness to travel 30-50% of the time, via company car & by plane (50/50).
  • 5+ years of experience within the electrical industry.
  • Experience selling through electrical distribution channels.
  • Existing relationships with electrical distributors, manufacturer representatives, contractors, engineers, or industrial customers.
  • Strong understanding of electrical power distribution products, circuit protection, power quality, surge protection, fuses, switchgear, or related technologies.
  • Experience managing manufacturer representatives preferred.
  • Proven ability to develop territory growth strategies and execute independently.
  • Strong presentation, communication, and relationship-building skills.
  • Bachelor's degree preferred, business, supply chain, engineering or technical background a plus.
