What is an independent contractor telehealth?

An Independent Contractor Telehealth job is a remote healthcare position where licensed professionals provide virtual medical or mental health services to patients. As an independent contractor, you are not an employee but rather a self-employed provider responsible for managing your own schedule, documentation, and compliance with state and federal regulations. These roles often involve video consultations, phone calls, or messaging-based care. Payment is typically per consultation or on a contractual basis, and you are responsible for your own taxes and benefits.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the independent contractor telehealth position?

To thrive as an Independent Contractor Telehealth professional, you typically need a valid clinical license (such as RN, LCSW, LMFT, or MD), strong clinical assessment skills, and experience in remote healthcare delivery. Familiarity with telehealth platforms, secure video conferencing tools, and electronic health records (EHRs) is generally required, along with any state-specific telemedicine certifications. Excellent communication, empathy, self-motivation, and strong organizational skills are essential to succeed independently. These skills ensure effective remote patient care, compliance with regulatory standards, and the ability to build trust and rapport virtually.

What does the typical work schedule look like for an independent contractor telehealth?

As an Independent Contractor Telehealth provider, your schedule is often flexible and may be set by you, depending on client demand and contractual agreements. Many contractors enjoy the ability to work from home, choosing appointment slots that fit their personal and professional lives. However, you may need to offer some availability during evenings or weekends to accommodate patient needs. While you work independently, regular communication with platform support staff and occasional collaboration with other healthcare professionals may be required for coordinated care. This flexibility and autonomy can offer a balanced lifestyle but also requires strong self-management and accountability.

Job description

Independent Contractor Telehealth Physician

9amHealth is seeking licensed physicians to serve as independent contractor telehealth physicians. As an independent contractor, you will provide synchronous video appointments to patients with cardiometabolic conditions. This role is limited to conducting real-time medical consultations.

Conduct synchronous telehealth consultations with patients as scheduled by 9amHealth for cardiometabolic conditions (diabetes, hypertension, obesity, hyperlipidemia).

Perform medical assessments appropriate to the encounter, review patient histories, and address patient concerns within the scope of the appointment.

Provide medical recommendations, prescriptions, or referrals as appropriate, consistent with state medical licensure and applicable standards of care.

Maintain accurate documentation of patient encounters in 9amHealth's electronic health record system, limited to information generated during the synchronous visit.

Medical degree (MD or DO) from an accredited institution.

Active board certification in Internal Medicine, Family Medicine, Endocrinology, Cardiology, Obesity Medicine, or a related specialty.

Experience treating cardiometabolic conditions including type 2 diabetes, hypertension, hyperlipidemia, and obesity.

Active medical license in the state(s) where services are provided.

Strong communication skills and ability to deliver care virtually.

Prior telemedicine experience preferred.

This is a 1099 independent contractor engagement.

Contractors are not employees of 9amHealth and are not eligible for employee benefits.

Contractors retain control over how and when services are provided, subject only to applicable scheduling commitments and medical/legal requirements.

Contractors are responsible for maintaining their own licensure, and tax obligations.

Engagements are non-exclusive; physicians may provide services to other entities simultaneously.

9amHealth complies with all applicable federal, state, and local laws regarding independent contractor relationships. We welcome applications from a diverse range of physicians, including those from BIPOC, LGBTQ+, and underrepresented communities.

At 9amHealth, you'll join the exciting environment of a startup with the stability of highly experienced founders that have successfully built a business from scratch. We foster a collaborative learning mindset and a passion for improvement. You'll work with a brand-new product alongside a small, flexible team of people eager to shape technology, infrastructure, and culture.

Our team members are spread across the globe, with physical sites in San Diego, California, and Vienna, Austria, but we value your culture regardless of where you work.

We offer a comprehensive benefits package, including health, dental, and vision insurance, along with flexible PTO and work from home options. We provide a professional development budget and support continuing education, empowering our team to grow alongside the company. Team members have the opportunity to make a meaningful impact on chronic disease management and patient outcomes while contributing to a collaborative, mission driven culture focused on improving healthcare accessibility and affordability.

Diabetes disproportionately impacts BIPOC (black, indigenous, and people of color) communities. We are committed to creating a workforce that reflects our patients and creating a positive healthcare experience for them. We welcome applications from people of color, LGBTQ+ individuals, people with disabilities, members of ethnic minorities, and foreign born residents.
