ABOUT THRASHER

The Thrasher Group has been improving the communities where we live and work since 1983 – not as outside consultants, but as residents and neighbors. Thrasher is the largest privately owned architecture, engineering, and surveying firm in West Virginia, and maintains a growing presence in Ohio, Pennsylvania, Maryland, and Virginia. Our roots throughout central Appalachia and the Mid-Atlantic region have allowed us to build a reputation for doing meaningful work for communities of all sizes.

What does this mean for you? Thrasher provides real opportunities to be part of vital projects, take on real-world responsibility, and work alongside an array of industry professionals across the full life cycle of a project. We partner with independent contractors who bring specialized expertise and want the flexibility to manage their own schedule and workload while contributing to meaningful, community-focused work.

ROLE OVERVIEW

The Thrasher Group is seeking a Senior Construction Manager, engaged as an independent contractor (1099), to support a large-scale, mission-critical infrastructure project in Mason County, WV. Thrasher serves as the owner's technical and quality representative on this project, observing, verifying, and documenting the contractor's work for conformance with the project plans and specifications.

This is a senior field engagement supporting the lead Construction Manager. The successful contractor will serve as Thrasher's principal on-site representative during the lead's absences, including nights and weekends as the project transitions to around-the-clock operations. This role demands independent judgment, extensive heavy civil and utility construction experience, and the ability to represent the owner's interests on a large, fast-moving site.

ENGAGEMENT TYPE

This is a 1099 independent contractor engagement, not an employee role. As an independent contractor, you will:

  • Operate as your own business entity, responsible for your own tax filings, insurance, and equipment
  • Be engaged on a per-project basis, with compensation set out in your contractor agreement
  • Provide your own means of transportation and lodging for extended on-site coverage unless otherwise negotiated
  • Not be eligible for Thrasher's employee benefits programs (health insurance, retirement plans, paid time off, etc.), consistent with independent contractor status
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Serve as senior on-site representative of Thrasher in its role as the owner's technical and quality representative
  • Monitor and document earthwork, utility, and site development activities for conformance with plans and specifications
  • Act as Thrasher's primary point of contact for the owner and general contractor when the lead Construction Manager is unavailable
  • Review and manage daily field reports, track reported production and earthwork volumes, and document SWPPP and quality compliance
  • Identify and elevate nonconformance, discrepancies, and schedule risks early
WHAT YOU'LL BRING

Experience: 10+ years in heavy civil and/or utility construction, with senior field experience Technical: Deep working knowledge of earthwork, underground utilities, and site development; ability to read plans and specifications and recognize when work is not tracking to them Independence: Comfortable serving as the senior owner's representative on a large site with minimal oversight Availability: Willingness to cover a rotating/extended schedule as the project scales to 24-7 operations Certifications: PE, CCM, PMP, or relevant certifications a plus, not required Business requirements: Ability to provide proof of independent contractor status (e.g., business license, general liability insurance) as required by contract

COMPENSATION & CONTRACT TERMS

Compensation is paid per the terms of your independent contractor agreement (e.g., per project, per day, or per coverage period) and is reported annually via Form 1099-NEC. Contractors are responsible for their own income tax withholding, including self-employment tax, and for maintaining any required licenses or insurance.

Pre-engagement drug screening and background checks required. Must be authorized to work in the United States.
