How much do independent contractor medical assistant jobs pay per hour?

As of Jul 26, 2026, the average hourly pay for independent contractor medical assistant in Springfield, MA is $19.82, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $17.02 and $21.78 per hour, depending on experience, location, and employer.

How does working as an independent contractor medical assistant differ from being a traditional employee in a medical office?

As an independent contractor medical assistant, you'll typically have greater flexibility in your schedule and may work with multiple healthcare providers or facilities rather than being tied to a single employer. You'll be responsible for managing your own taxes, benefits, and liability insurance, as these are not usually provided by the contracting organization. This role often requires strong self-management skills and adaptability, as you may encounter different clinical settings, workflows, and electronic health record systems. Building strong professional relationships and maintaining clear communication with both clinical staff and administrative teams is essential for success in this more autonomous position.

Where do MA's get paid the most?

Medical assistants tend to earn higher wages in regions with a higher cost of living and greater healthcare demand, such as metropolitan areas and states with robust healthcare industries. Salaries can also vary based on experience, certifications, and the work environment, including hospitals or specialized clinics.

What is an Independent Contractor Medical Assistant?

An Independent Contractor Medical Assistant is a healthcare professional who provides medical assisting services on a contract basis rather than as a traditional employee. They typically work with multiple practices, clinics, or physicians, performing tasks such as taking patient histories, assisting with exams, and handling administrative duties. Unlike regular staff, independent contractors are responsible for their own taxes, benefits, and scheduling. This arrangement offers flexibility but also requires strong organizational and business skills to manage multiple clients and compliance requirements.

What is the difference between Independent Contractor Medical Assistant vs Employee Medical Assistant?

AspectIndependent Contractor Medical AssistantEmployee Medical Assistant
CredentialsCertified or Registered Medical Assistant (CMA/RMA)Certified or Registered Medical Assistant (CMA/RMA)
Work EnvironmentFreelance, multiple clinics, flexible scheduleClinic or hospital, fixed schedule
Employer RelationshipSelf-employed, contracts with healthcare providersEmployed by healthcare facility

Independent Contractor Medical Assistants typically work on a freelance basis, offering services to multiple healthcare providers with flexible hours. In contrast, Employee Medical Assistants are employed directly by clinics or hospitals with fixed schedules. Both roles often require similar credentials, but their work arrangements and flexibility differ significantly.

How to make $100,000 as a medical assistant?

Earning $100,000 as a medical assistant typically requires gaining advanced certifications, specialized skills, or working in high-paying environments such as outpatient clinics or specialty practices. Increasing experience, pursuing additional training, and taking on supervisory or administrative roles can also boost earning potential, though reaching this salary level may be uncommon for standard medical assistant positions.

Can a medical assistant work independently?

Medical assistants typically work under the supervision of physicians or other healthcare providers and are employed by clinics, hospitals, or medical offices. While some medical assistants may perform certain tasks independently, full independence is limited by state regulations and the scope of practice. Certification and specific training can enhance their ability to work autonomously within their permitted duties.

What jobs pay 4000 a week without a degree?

An independent contractor medical assistant typically does not earn $4,000 a week without additional certifications or specialized skills. High weekly earnings in such roles are uncommon; most medical assistants earn lower wages, and earning that level often requires experience, advanced training, or working in high-demand environments. Jobs that can pay $4,000 weekly without a degree usually involve sales, real estate, or skilled trades with commission or project-based pay structures.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an Independent Contractor Medical Assistant, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Independent Contractor Medical Assistant, you need a solid understanding of clinical procedures, medical terminology, and administrative tasks, typically supported by a medical assistant certification or diploma. Familiarity with electronic health record (EHR) systems, scheduling software, and basic medical equipment is usually required. Excellent organizational skills, self-motivation, and strong interpersonal communication help you manage diverse tasks and client relationships independently. These skills are essential for delivering quality patient care and ensuring efficient practice operations without direct supervision.
