What is an independent contractor business development professional?

Independent Contractor Business Development professionals are self-employed individuals who help organizations identify new business opportunities, establish client relationships, and drive growth, typically on a contract basis rather than as full-time employees. They may be responsible for lead generation, market research, sales presentations, and negotiating deals. Their flexible, project-based roles allow companies to access business development expertise without a long-term commitment. Independent contractors are responsible for their own taxes and benefits, and often work with multiple clients or industries.

What are some common challenges independent contractor business development professionals face when building client relationships?

Independent contractor business development professionals often encounter challenges such as establishing credibility with new clients, managing multiple client expectations simultaneously, and navigating periods of inconsistent workflow. Since they operate independently, building trust is crucial and requires strong communication and follow-up skills. Additionally, independent contractors must proactively network and market their services to maintain a steady pipeline of opportunities, all while keeping up with administrative tasks without the support of a larger team.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an independent contractor in business development, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Independent Contractor in Business Development, you need strong sales acumen, market research ability, and a proven track record in generating leads and closing deals. Familiarity with CRM platforms, digital marketing tools, and relevant industry certifications like Certified Professional Sales Person (CPSP) are often valuable. Outstanding self-motivation, relationship-building, and negotiation skills set top performers apart in this role. These competencies are crucial for driving business growth and succeeding independently in a competitive marketplace.

Job description

Business Development Manager - Cleaners Warehouse
Premier Restoration Hawai'i | Maui, Hawai'i| Full-Time
Premier Restoration Hawai'i is looking for a Business Development Manager to drive the growth of our Cleaners Warehouse business on Maui.
Cleaners Warehouse serves contractors, restoration professionals, and hospitality businesses, and other commercial customers with professional-grade cleaning chemicals, equipment and specialty products.
We're looking for someone who knows how to build relationships, open doors, create opportunities, and turn those opportunities into revenue.
This is not a desk sales role. You'll be out in the Maui market developing relationships, visiting customers and job sites, building a pipeline, and expanding our presence within the contractor and commercial community. You'll also spend scheduled time in our Cleaners Warehouse location, staying close to our customers, products, and day-to-day business.
What You'll Own
  • Develop new contractor, commercial, hospitality, property management, and other key accounts across Maui.
  • Build and manage a strong pipeline through prospecting, referrals, networking, job-site visits, and industry relationships.
  • Grow existing accounts by identifying additional products, equipment, rentals, and solutions that support their businesses.
  • Build trusted, long-term customer relationships and become a go-to resource for their product and equipment needs.
  • Prepare quotes, follow up on opportunities, and drive business through close.
  • Conduct customer visits, product demonstrations, and job-site consultations.
  • Develop relationships with vendors, trade organizations, and industry partners to generate leads and expand market presence.
  • Coordinate customer training, vendor demonstrations, trade shows, and other business development opportunities.
  • Track sales activity and performance against established goals and identify opportunities to accelerate growth.
  • Partner with leadership to help shape and execute the growth strategy for Cleaners Warehouse on Maui.
  • Provide scheduled retail coverage and support customers with products, orders, pickups, and equipment rentals.

What We're Looking For
  • 3+ years of business development, outside sales, account management, or related sales experience.
  • Proven ability to develop relationships, generate new business, and achieve sales or revenue goals.
  • A self-starter who enjoys prospecting and building a market, not waiting for business to walk through the door.
  • Strong communication, negotiation, organization, and follow-through.
  • Comfortable learning technical products and helping customers find practical solutions.
  • Valid driver's license and ability to travel throughout Maui.

Industry experience is a plus, but not required. Experience in cleaning, restoration, construction supply, building materials, hospitality, property management, or a related industry is especially valuable.
Compensation & Benefits
  • 401(k) with company match
  • Paid time off
  • Health insurance
  • Employee recognition and awards
  • Salary + Commission eligible

Why This Role?
This is an opportunity to take ownership of a market and help grow an established local business. You'll have the freedom to build relationships across Maui, develop new revenue opportunities, and see the direct impact of the business you bring in.
If you're competitive, relationship-driven, and energized by building something, we'd like to meet you.
In-state applicants only. Local and occasional inter-island travel is required. This position includes scheduled retail counter coverage.
All offers of employment are contingent upon successful completion of required pre-employment drug and background screening.
Premier Restoration Hawai'i is an Equal Opportunity Employer.
