Position Description
The Department of English at Texas State University invites applicants for a full-time (nine-month) faculty position at the rank of tenured associate, tenured advanced associate, or tenured full professor to begin in Fall 2027 at our San Marcos campus.
The successful candidate will be expected to sustain a significant, ongoing research agenda commensurate with their appointed rank that leads to peer-reviewed publication and demonstrates leadership and impact in the field. The candidate will also teach and provide leadership in the M.A. in Technical Communication Program and in our growing undergraduate technical communication offerings. Additional duties include significant participation in the continued development of graduate and undergraduate programs in technical communication, mentorship of junior faculty, leadership on college and university-level committees, and appropriate administrative and programmatic responsibilities.
The typical teaching load for faculty is 3/3 with some opportunities for course load reduction. Course offerings typically include a mixture of face-to-face, hybrid, and online modalities.
Required Qualifications
- Ph.D. in technical communication or closely related field.
- Established, ongoing record of productive scholarship commensurate with rank, evidenced by peer-reviewed publications in technical communication journals and/or book series.
- Evidence of developing and submitting competitive research grant applications, accompanied by an explanation of the impact of awarded funds, if any, on the candidate's research agenda.
- Evidence of broader impact and recognition within the field, which may include invited presentations, awards and honors, leadership in professional organizations, editorial service, influence on pedagogy or professional practice, or other forms of sustained disciplinary impact and leadership that shape the field.
- Evidence of the successful direction of master's theses and/or doctoral dissertations in technical communication.
- Experience with academic program administration, coordination, or hands-on leadership in building, developing, or scaling undergraduate or graduate programs, including curriculum development, program innovation, and collaborative work across various academic disciplines.
Preferred Qualifications
- Industry experience as a technical writer, information architect, UX designer, content strategist, or related field.
- Evidence of successful competitive grant applications and experience managing or contributing to externally funded research, accompanied by an explanation of the impact of awarded funds on the candidate's research agenda.
- Experience in international research contexts, including international technical communication, global collaboration, or academic/professional positions in international settings.
- Research and teaching specialties in areas that diversify Texas State University's current and proposed graduate program curricula including, but not limited to, digital humanities, emerging technologies, international technical communication, and professional communication related to the fields of criminal justice, construction science, and engineering.
- Ability to teach varied curriculum in technical communication, including courses such as editing, science writing, structured authoring, international technical communication, content management, data visualization, UX research with AI, writing with AI, and document design.
- Experience teaching in online or hybrid modalities.
