What does an in house attorney do?

An in-house attorney is a lawyer who works directly for a corporation or organization, rather than at a law firm. Their responsibilities typically include providing legal advice to the company, handling contracts, overseeing compliance with laws and regulations, and managing legal risks. They may also represent the company in negotiations, handle employment issues, and coordinate with outside counsel for specialized matters. In-house attorneys play a key role in protecting the company's interests and ensuring legal compliance across all operations.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an in house attorney?

To thrive as an In House Attorney, you need a Juris Doctor (JD) degree, active bar membership, and a strong grasp of corporate, contract, and compliance law. Familiarity with legal research databases, contract management systems, and e-discovery platforms is typically required. Excellent negotiation, problem-solving, and interpersonal skills help build trust with internal stakeholders and manage legal risks effectively. These skills are crucial for providing timely, practical legal advice that protects the organization and supports its business objectives.

What are some common challenges faced by in house attorneys compared to those in law firms?

In-house attorneys often encounter the challenge of balancing legal risk with business objectives, as they must provide practical, timely advice that aligns with company goals. Unlike law firm roles, in-house counsel typically handle a broader range of issues, from contract review to compliance and employment matters, often with fewer resources. Additionally, they work closely with various departments, requiring strong communication skills and the ability to explain complex legal concepts to non-lawyers. This collaborative, business-integrated environment can be both rewarding and demanding.

Job description

In-House Attorney – USABotics (Contract, Hybrid)

Location: Tooele, UT (Hybrid: Remote + 1 day in-office per week)

Compensation: $100–$200 per hour (DOE)

Job Type: Contract

About USABotics

USABotics is an innovative technology company focused on advanced robotics and next-generation solutions. As we scale rapidly, we’re looking for a strategic, battle-tested Attorney to handle a wide range of legal matters and help build a robust legal foundation for our growing company.

The Opportunity

This is a high-impact contract role for an experienced attorney who thrives in a fast-paced, entrepreneurial environment. Litigation is mandatory. You will immediately take ownership of active litigation matters, including case strategy, discovery, filings, court appearances, and trial preparation. You’ll also manage contracts, corporate matters, and negotiations. If you’re a proactive problem-solver who wants your work to directly shape a fast-growing company, this is the role for you.

Responsibilities

What You’ll Do

With the support of a dedicated in-house paralegal, you will:

  • Lead and support litigation, including case strategy, discovery, filings, and court appearances/trial preparation.
  • Manage document-heavy litigation processes, including Bates numbering and content document management.
  • Draft, review, and negotiate a broad range of agreements (vendor, client, partnership, IP, and technology contracts).
  • Provide strategic counsel on corporate governance, compliance, and regulatory matters.
  • Conduct targeted legal research and deliver clear, actionable recommendations to leadership.
  • Collaborate with internal teams to ensure regulatory compliance and mitigate risk as we scale.
  • Represent USABotics in negotiations, mediations, and settlement discussions.

What You Bring

  • Juris Doctor (JD) from an accredited law school.
  • Active Utah Bar license in good standing.
  • 3+ years of relevant experience in litigation, contracts, and/or corporate law (trial or heavy motion practice experience strongly preferred).
  • Litigation experience is mandatory. Candidates must be prepared to immediately step into active litigation matters upon hire, including managing ongoing cases, court filings, discovery, and trial preparation from day one.
  • Willingness to litigate and appear in court when necessary.
  • Strong organizational skills with proven experience in Bates numbering and content/document management systems.
  • Excellent writing, negotiation, and communication skills — you can translate complex legal issues into clear business advice.
  • Self-starter with strong judgment who excels working independently in a dynamic environment.
  • Comfortable with a hybrid schedule: fully remote with one in-office day per week in the Tooele area.

Note for applicants

This role requires an attorney who is prepared to try cases, not one whose default approach is settlement. Our active matters are well-positioned, and we expect counsel to enter them with a trial-ready posture and to see them through to verdict when that is the right course.

You will step into long-running, ongoing disputes rather than starting from a clean slate. The work is full-time litigation: you will own these matters and manage them day to day, with the support of a paralegal who knows the cases thoroughly and can help you get up to speed quickly. We are looking for someone who is comfortable joining midstream, relying on that existing institutional knowledge, staying the course, and taking these disputes to trial when necessary.

If that matches how you practice, we welcome your application.

Why Join USABotics

  • Competitive pay — $100–$200/hour based on experience and impact.
  • Fully flexible hours and work schedule, with true flexibility around your availability while maintaining one in-office day per week for meaningful collaboration.
  • Dedicated in-house paralegal provided and fully at your disposal to support document management, research, discovery, drafting, and day-to-day litigation tasks.
  • Direct ownership of high-visibility, high-stakes work (including trial-level matters).
  • Work with cutting-edge technology alongside a passionate, mission-driven team.
  • Significant professional growth in a fast-moving, innovative company.

This is also an opportunity to build a lasting in-house practice. Successful handling of the current matters can lead to a permanent counsel role supporting this company and its partner companies. We expect a continuing need for dedicated legal counsel after these cases conclude and are prepared to invest in an attorney who wants to grow with us in that capacity.

Next Steps

If you’re a sharp, strategic attorney ready to make a real difference in a transformative company, we want to hear from you.

Please submit your resume and a brief cover letter. In your cover letter, tell us about your litigation or contract experience and why you’re excited about USABotics. We review applications on a rolling basis.
