Summary

Duties and Responsibilities:

• Performs all the duties of a Morgue Specialist I and II
• Oversees the daily operation of the Morgue Section in absence of Morgue Supervisor during all weekends and holidays or under the direction of the Morgue Supervisor
• Assigns daily morgue caseload
• Monitors and manages morgue census
• Performs daily quality assurance on toxicology samples; intake, autopsy and identification photographs; radiograph quality; morgue paperwork; fingerprints; and morgue operations
• Monitors and maintains supply inventory for the Morgue
• Monitors and maintains morgue equipment including autopsy trays, surgical instruments and equipment, body coolers, morgue work areas, evidence tables and equipment, and photography equipment
• Coordinates BCMEO Neuropathology program, serving as liaison with the UT-Health Pathology department
• Coordinates BCMEO Infectious Disease surveillance program serving as liaison with San Antonio Metro Health Dept
• Assists in developing, implementing and monitoring safety and standard operating policies and procedures for the Morgue and in preparing monthly reports for the Morgue
• Enters evidence into State evidence system (Track Kit)
• May testify in a court of law regarding morgue operations including evidence and body handling procedures
• Performs other duties as assigned

Minimum Qualifications:

• Graduation from an accredited University with a Bachelors' Degree in Criminal Justice, Mortuary Science, Forensic Science or closely related field and three (3) years of experience as a Morgue Specialist II including one (1) year supervisory experience; or equivalent combination of education and experience
• Must have knowledge of the Texas Code of Criminal Procedures Chapter 49 and related statutes; knowledge of death investigation and procedures; knowledge of the criminal justice system; knowledge of human anatomy, health care systems, health and safety standards and practices, basic pathophysiology, and medical terminology
• Meets all qualifications for Morgue Specialist II position including skill in autopsy photography; fingerprinting and other identification techniques; chain of custody; infectious disease testing; evidence processing and specialized radiography
• Ability to supervise technical employees; ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing; ability to adjust to rapidly fluctuating situations; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with coworkers, County employees, outside agencies and the general public.
• Must have good written and oral communication skills required; excellent computer skills, including word processing
• Must secure and maintain a favorable background investigation
• Must clear a pre-employment physical and a pre-employment drug screen test
• Shift work to provide evening hour coverage is required
• Must secure and maintain a favorable background investigation from the FBI and/or Bexar County Sheriff's Office
• May be required to work more than 40 hours during the workweek

Working Environment and Physical Demands:

• Constantly working in indoor conditions
• Work environment involves exposure to blood, body fluids, surgical cutting, unfavorable fumes, vapors or odors and potentially infectious material; occasional exposure to flammable, toxic or other hazardous/bio-hazardous materials and radiation
• Frequently moves items weighing up to 20 pounds; occasionally moves items 200 pounds
• Occasionally moves about the office
• Frequently communicates with others; must be able to exchange accurate information
• Constantly operates a computer and other office productivity machinery
• Positions self to perform essential functions
• Must be able to remain in a stationary position
