Job description

Job Summary
Under general supervision of Forensic Pathologists, eviscerates bodies, collects and secures personal belongings, evidence and specimens. Working conditions are in a morgue with exposure to temperature variations, damp-wet surfaces, decomposing bodies, infectious diseases and unfavorable odors.
Essential Functions
  • Frequent exposure to contagious tissues, fluids and hazardous chemicals. Work environment can be very unpleasant due to odors and conditions of corpses.
  • Ability to maintain a professional temperament dealing with traumatic/emotional circumstances such as child abuse, dismemberment, fire and homicides.
  • Reviews and arranges patient information from medical examiner or clinical chart and assures pertinent autopsy information is available for Pathologist.
  • Prepare body for autopsy by ensuring proper identification, photographing body, removing/inventorying personal belonging, cleaning body and documenting injuries.
  • Assists in the case dissection and the weighing of organs.
  • Collect and properly label toxicology/laboratory specimens and evidence that is requested by Pathologist/Law enforcement.
  • Prepares post-autopsy body for release to funeral home and cleans morgue after autopsy is complete.

Qualifications
  • Required Associate's Degree or equivalent
  • Preferred Science courses particularly in anatomy and/or physiology

  • Prior morgue experience assisting with autopsies Preferred
