What is an IBM i developer?

An IBM i Developer is a software professional who specializes in developing, maintaining, and modernizing applications on the IBM i platform (formerly known as AS/400 or iSeries). They typically use languages such as RPG, COBOL, and CL, and work with IBM's integrated operating system and database. These developers are responsible for ensuring business applications run smoothly, integrating new technologies, and often upgrading legacy code to meet modern standards.

What are some common challenges faced by IBM i developers when modernizing legacy systems?

IBM i Developers often encounter challenges when updating or integrating legacy applications with newer technologies. These challenges include understanding and refactoring decades-old code, ensuring compatibility with modern web or mobile interfaces, and maintaining data integrity during migrations. Collaborating closely with business analysts and other IT teams is crucial for translating legacy functions into modern solutions while minimizing disruption to daily operations. Staying up to date with modernization tools like RPG IV, SQL, and APIs can greatly aid in overcoming these hurdles.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an IBM i developer, and why are they important?

To thrive as an IBM i Developer, you need a strong background in RPG, COBOL, or CL programming, familiarity with IBM i (AS/400) systems, and typically a degree in computer science or related field. Expertise in using IBM Rational Developer for i, DB2 database management, and experience with legacy application modernization tools are commonly required. Analytical thinking, problem-solving, and effective communication are vital soft skills for collaborating with teams and addressing business requirements. These skills ensure robust application development, system stability, and the ability to adapt legacy systems to evolving organizational needs.

Job description

I have an opportunity for "IBM AS/400 ___100% REMOTE" and I am looking for a candidate who can join Immediately if you are interested, reply to me with your updated resume or if you could refer someone I would really appreciate it.
Position : Strong IBM AS/400
Location : Remote
Duration : 6 to 12 Months
Visa : US Citizens only
MUST HAVE : (IBM) (AS/400) (DB2) SQL) (IFS) (LPARS)
Summary and context:
This role isn't about generic "transformation" or environment management. The real differentiator is proven, hands-on experience shifting from waterfall to iterative delivery - specifically designing and governing pre-production environments to enable frequent, incremental releases.
Our IBM i (AS/400) environment has reliably powered critical business operations for years but is ripe for evolution. Large, monolithic applications and limited automation offer opportunities for incremental refactoring, modular design, and deeper integration with DevOps and cloud practices.
By making these changes thoughtfully, we can preserve the platform's stability while boosting developer velocity, improving performance, and fostering collaboration - without disrupting essential business functions.
Key responsibilities:
• Assess IBM i environments: Evaluate existing Power infrastructure, tools, and processes to identify bottlenecks in software delivery.
• Develop optimization strategy: Create a roadmap for modernizing IBM i environments by integrating automation, cloud-based solutions, and DevOps best practices. Define strategies for self-service environments, CI/CD automation, and infrastructure-as-code to speed up development and testing.
• Leverage marketplace innovations: Research and implement new technologies, tools, and services that enhance developer productivity and reduce cycle times.
• Performance & cost optimization: Identify opportunities to reduce operational costs while improving system performance, scalability, and reliability.
• Stakeholder collaboration: Work closely with software engineering, operations, and infrastructure teams to align environment strategies with business goals.
Required Qualifications:
• Technical expertise: Deep knowledge and demonstrated experience with IBM i (AS/400) systems, including LPARs, IFS, DB2/SQL, MQ, partitioning, and core middleware
• Performance analysis: Ability to analyze and optimize performance using IBM Performance tools (Job Watcher, SQL Performance tools, ACS ...) to aid in software development lifecycles within IBM i ecosystems.
• DevOps & automation: Experience implementing DevOps pipelines, CI/CD automation, MDCMS version control and infrastructure as code in midrange environments.
• Transformational leadership and stakeholder communication
o Proven success driving major IT transformation initiatives, with a focus on stakeholder buy-in and organizational change.
o Strong written and verbal communication skills to influence technical and non[1]technical stakeholders.
• Industry knowledge: Familiarity with emerging trends in midrange computing, cloud integration, and developer productivity tools.
