What is a human services case manager?

Human Services Case Managers are professionals who help individuals and families access social services, resources, and support tailored to their needs. They assess clients' situations, develop care plans, coordinate services like housing, healthcare, or counseling, and monitor progress to ensure goals are met. Case managers act as advocates, connecting clients with community resources and providing ongoing support throughout the process. Their work is essential in helping people overcome challenges related to mental health, substance abuse, poverty, and family issues.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a human services case manager?

To thrive as a Human Services Case Manager, you need a background in social work or a related field, case management experience, and often a bachelor's degree in social sciences. Familiarity with case management software, client databases, and sometimes certifications like Certified Case Manager (CCM) are typically required. Strong interpersonal skills, active listening, and cultural sensitivity help build trust and effectively advocate for clients. These abilities ensure effective client support, resource coordination, and successful outcomes in complex social service environments.

What are some common challenges human services case managers face when working with diverse client populations?

Human Services Case Managers often encounter challenges such as language barriers, cultural differences, and varying levels of client engagement. Navigating these challenges requires strong communication skills, cultural competence, and adaptability. Case managers must also balance large caseloads, manage time effectively, and collaborate closely with other agencies or service providers to ensure clients receive comprehensive support. Continuous learning and seeking feedback from colleagues can help case managers address these challenges and deliver better outcomes for clients.

Job description

Our CommunityThe Reno-Sparks Indian Colony represents descendants of three Great Basin Indigenous peoples: the Numu (Northern Paiute), Newe (Western Shoshone), and Washeshu (Washoe). These communities lived in harmony with the land for generations before European contact, following seasonal cycles and forming small, efficient social groups for survival. Each group's name means "The People" in their own language, reflecting their deep cultural identity and connection to the Earth. They maintained strong traditions, respected neighboring tribes, and engaged in trade throughout the region.Today, the Reno-Sparks Indian Colony continues to honor these traditions while supporting the well-being, culture, and future of its tribal community.Role OverviewThe Human Services Manager leads RSIC Human Services to ensure programs funded through PL 93-638 contracts and other approved grants meet objectives, compliance requirements, and community needs. This role provides operational leadership, fiscal oversight, and direct social work support across a broad service portfolio.Key responsibilities include supervising and evaluating Human Services staff; directing daily operations; overseeing programs such as Foster Care Licensing, Child Welfare/Protection, Elder Protection, ICWA, General Assistance, burial and emergency assistance; interpreting and applying Tribal/Federal laws and grant guidelines; managing budgets, purchasing, and required reporting; coordinating services with Tribal, federal, state, and county partners; conducting case management and investigations; preparing court reports/testimony; and participating in multidisciplinary meetings. Valid NV driver's license, insurability, and ability to pass required screenings/background checks.Apply to help deliver reliable, compliant, client-centered services for the community.A Typical DayYour day often starts by scanning priorities across multiple service areas-checking in with staff, reviewing time-sensitive ICWA or court-related deadlines, and confirming coverage for any urgent client needs. You'll shift between office-based leadership work and community-facing support: a quick budget check and approval of essential purchases, a partner call with county or state contacts to align services, then time set aside for documentation and required monthly/quarterly reporting.Midday may include a multidisciplinary meeting to coordinate next steps for a family or elder, followed by focused case notes and planning. When needed, you'll step into direct client support-ensuring plans are practical, timely, and respectful. Late afternoon is often for coaching staff, resolving barriers, and preparing for any after-hours emergency response that could arise.Benefits PackageMedical, dental, and vision coverage options through Hometown Health PPO and Lincoln plans, with RSIC paying 100% of employee-only premiums (medical, dental, vision). Dependent coverage is available with RSIC cost-sharing (employee & spouse, employee & child(ren), and employee & family).Life and Accidental Death & Dismemberment insurance: $50,000 policy paid by RSIC (reduces to $25,000 after age 70). Optional add-on coverages (e.g., AFLAC, LegalShield) are available at additional cost.Paid time off includes:- Annual Leave: 4 hours accrued per pay period (usable after probation; increases after 5 years per policy)- Sick Leave: 4 hours accrued per pay period (usable immediately)- Paid Holidays: 13 paid holidays per calendar year401(k): eligible to contribute after 60 days of full-time employment; employer match begins after 1 year; includes a discretionary RSIC contribution. Please Note: Hiring preference is provided to qualified members of the Reno-Sparks Indian Colony followed by members of other federally recognized tribes.
