What does an HPC engineer do?

An HPC (High-Performance Computing) Engineer designs, deploys, and optimizes high-performance computing systems used for intensive computational tasks. They work with parallel computing, cluster management, and performance tuning to ensure efficient processing of large-scale simulations, data analysis, and scientific research. Their role often involves configuring hardware, optimizing software, and troubleshooting issues to maximize system performance.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an HPC engineer?

To thrive as an HPC Engineer, you need a solid background in computer science, mathematics, or a related field, with expertise in parallel computing, Linux systems, and high-performance cluster management. Proficiency with job schedulers (like SLURM or PBS), programming languages such as C/C++ or Python, and experience with distributed file systems are highly valuable, and certifications in relevant areas can enhance your qualifications. Strong problem-solving, collaboration, and communication skills help you work efficiently within technical teams and explain complex concepts to non-experts. These skills and qualities are essential for ensuring high performance, reliability, and scalability of computing systems in scientific and enterprise settings.

What are some of the common challenges faced by HPC engineers in their day-to-day work?

HPC Engineers often encounter challenges such as optimizing performance for complex workloads, troubleshooting system failures, and efficiently managing large-scale infrastructures. You may be required to balance the needs of multiple users and projects, quickly address hardware or software issues, and stay ahead of evolving technologies. Collaboration with researchers, IT staff, and software developers is key to designing robust solutions. Overcoming these challenges helps improve computational efficiency and supports critical research and business objectives.

Are HPC engineers in demand?

HPC (High-Performance Computing) engineers are in high demand due to the increasing need for advanced computing in fields like scientific research, data analysis, and artificial intelligence. Employers seek professionals skilled in parallel programming, cluster management, and tools such as Linux and MPI, often requiring relevant certifications and experience with large-scale systems.

How much do HPC engineers make in the US?

HPC (High-Performance Computing) engineers in the US typically earn between $80,000 and $150,000 annually, depending on experience, education, and location. Senior roles or those with specialized skills in parallel computing, cluster management, or specific tools like MPI or CUDA can earn higher salaries.

Job description

Location: This role is based at our Bothell, WA office, with the option to work a few days a week remotely.
Travel: Up to 10%, domestic and international.ย
Job ID:
1753

The Role:ย

At scale, quantum computers will be integrated into classical datacenters - combining the unique strengths of CPUs, GPUs, and QPUs will help us solve the world's hardest problems. We're building a cloud service that lets customers combine quantum and classical computation seamlessly, where the classical can be either general-purpose or high-performance computing (HPC). As a Senior Staff Software Engineer leading our hybrid execution efforts, you'll define and build the platform that makes hybrid quantum-classical workloads easy to write, extend, and run in production.ย

Responsibilities:

  • Lead the design and delivery of our Hosted Hybrid Service, partnering closely with product management to define the product and validate it
  • Define the execution model for the hybrid service - how quantum-classical workloads are defined, how they can be extended, and how customers specify HPC computation when it's needed
  • Drive the infrastructure strategy for the classical compute - both HPC and non-HPC - that backs hybrid jobs, in partnership with our cloud infrastructure team
  • Build and maintain a library of reusable quantum workloads for customers and internal teams to build on
  • Establish best practices for code development, quality assurance, documentation, and continuous integration and deployment
  • Collaborate across HPC, Cloud, and Product teams, and communicate with executive leadership
  • Mentor junior staff members; we'll ultimately be building a team around you!

You'd be a good fit with:

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, IT, or equivalent practical experience -- untraditional backgrounds are welcome and encouraged!
  • Demonstrated experience as a technical lead, with the ability to deliver projects in a dynamic and ambiguous environment
  • 10+ years experience in software engineering
  • Experience designing, building, and operating cloud-hosted services or APIs that external customers depend on
  • Familiarity with containerization technologies such as Docker and container orchestration platforms like Kubernetes
  • Experience defining extensible service or function models (e.g. plugin architectures or function-as-a-service)
  • Experience designing developer-facing libraries or SDKs used by external customers

You'd be a great fit with:

  • 15+ years experience in software engineering
  • Experience with hybrid quantum-classical computing frameworks or quantum SDKs
  • Experience integrating cloud services with HPC infrastructure
  • Exposure to quantum physics and/or quantum information science
