What is the difference between Hourly Rn vs Registered Nurse?

Work EnvironmentHospitals, clinics, home healthHospitals, clinics, long-term care
Employment TypeTypically hourly, per shiftFull-time, part-time, or per diem
Job RoleProvides patient care, often on a temporary basisProvides comprehensive patient care, often with more responsibilities

Hourly Rns are licensed nurses working on an hourly or per-shift basis, often in temporary or contract roles. Registered Nurses (RNs) may work full-time or part-time, with more consistent schedules and broader responsibilities. Both roles require RN licensure and similar skills, but the employment structure and job stability can differ.

What is an hourly RN?

Hourly RNs, or hourly registered nurses, are nursing professionals who are paid by the hour rather than receiving a fixed annual salary. They may work in various healthcare settings, including hospitals, clinics, and long-term care facilities, and often have flexible schedules, including part-time, per diem, or temporary shifts. Hourly RNs perform the same duties as salaried RNs, such as patient care, administering medications, and collaborating with healthcare teams, but their compensation is based on the number of hours worked.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an hourly RN?

To thrive as an Hourly RN, you need a valid nursing license (RN), strong clinical assessment abilities, and up-to-date knowledge of medical procedures. Familiarity with electronic health records (EHRs), medication administration systems, and standard clinical equipment is typically required. Exceptional time management, adaptability, and clear communication are vital for providing quality care across various shifts and settings. These skills ensure that Hourly RNs can deliver consistent, safe patient care while efficiently adapting to different teams and environments.

What are some common challenges faced by hourly RNs, and how can they effectively manage their time during shifts?

Hourly RNs often face challenges such as balancing high patient loads, adapting to varying shift schedules, and managing time-sensitive tasks across different units. Effective time management is crucial, so prioritizing patient care based on acuity, staying organized with checklists, and communicating proactively with team members can help streamline workflows. Additionally, working hourly may mean frequent handoffs, so clear documentation and thorough shift reports are essential for continuity of care.

Looking for a nursing role where you can build real relationships with your patients? Fresenius Medical Care is the world’s leading provider of products and services for people with kidney disease. Everything we do is driven by a clear vision: Creating a future worth living. For patients. Worldwide. Every day.

Become a Nurse at Fresenius Medical Care

We’re hiring Registered Nurses to provide direct patient care in our dialysis centers throughout Central Pennsylvania. • Paid training: No dialysis experience is needed. We provide 12 weeks of paid, comprehensive hemodialysis training and education to help you confidently transition into this specialty.

  • Sign-on bonus: In Central PA, we are pleased to offer a sign‑on bonus to qualified candidates who are successfully hired. Ask your recruiter for more details.

  • Work-life balance: No Sundays, minimal evening hours, all major holidays off, paid time off, and predictable schedules.

  • Career growth: Clinical Advancement Program (tiered for RNs to advance your career); Up to $4,400 tuition reimbursement per calendar year.

  • Competitive benefits: Medical, dental, vision, healthcare FSA, dependent care FSA, short- and long-term disability.

  • Work environment: Work in a collaborative, supportive, interdisciplinary environment where teamwork brings out the very best in each other.

Make an Impact as a Dialysis Nurse

  • Patient Care: Monitor, assess, and support patients before, during, and after hemodialysis treatments.

  • Clinical Procedures: Perform vascular access, collect and analyze patient data, perform laboratory collection, administer medications, and dialysis treatment.

  • Equipment and Safety: Prepare and use dialysis machines, ensuring proper function and hygiene.

  • Documentation: Accurately record care plans and patient treatment data, and follow medical prescriptions and internal protocols.

  • Teamwork and Education: Collaborate with teams, act as a Team Leader, support initial and ongoing patient and family education, and help onboard and train staff members.

We're Looking for RNs Who Have

  • Graduated from an accredited school of nursing
  • Current state licensure
  • CPR BLS certification
  • At least 9 months of experience as an RN
  • Ability to meet the physical demands and working conditions of the role, including: moving patients; assisting with ambulation; heavy lifting up to 200 lbs.; lifting chemical and water solutions up to 30 lbs. as high as 5 feet; prolonged standing; bending and lifting; being exposed to infectious and/or contagious diseases/materials; desk/computer work; interacting with patients and medical teams. May require travel to training sites or other facilities.

If you are ready to make a real impact in a supportive, specialized environment, we would love to hear from you.
