Job Responsibilities
This employee will be responsible for piloting, navigating and operating SCDNR - MRD's R/V Silver Crescent to support education and scientific research.
Job Duties Include:
  • Maintaining vessel with turnkey status.
  • Maintaining vessel safety program.
  • Maintaining complete bridge, engineering and maintenance logs.
  • Assisting with specifications for purchases, including yard work as directed by supervisor.
  • Meeting vessel scheduled departure time.
  • Assisting with duties and maintenance on other vessels when necessary.
  • Performing additional tasks as requested by the supervisor.

Minimum and Additional Requirements
A high school diploma and four (4) years of experience in the operation of a commercial fishing vessel, military or large private marine vessel.
A 25-Ton Masters (Captain's) License with the ability to upgrade to a 50-Ton Masters (Captain's) License and all associated certifications (i.e. first aid, CPR/AED, random drug testing program, etc.).
Preferred Qualifications
Experience and knowledge of piloting, navigating and operating large, ocean-going research vessels. Experience with bridge electronics, navigational equipment, diesel engines, generator maintenance, deck gear including winches, cranes, long line reels; hauling and towing techniques of said gear. Good communication skills, hearing and eyesight. Ability to perform duties during hazardous conditions due to heavy seas, high heat and working in confined spaces such as an engine room.
