Position Summary
Note: WSSU campus police is awarding a minimum bonus of $5,000 to attract highly effective law enforcement professionals. This bonus will be awarded after individuals complete the field training officer program, including all certification requirements set forth by North Carolina Training and Standards.
Additionally, a second bonus of up to $3,500 may be awarded at the end of year two.

This position performs law enforcement work at a University campus or other State facility. With full powers of arrest, positions enforce the laws of the State and the United States Government. Positions have law enforcement authority ranging from traffic control to criminal investigations within a limited geographic jurisdiction. Work involves patrolling an assigned area to respond to complaints or calls and to detect violations in enforcing State laws and applicable regulations. Duties include apprehending observed violators committing offenses, investigating violations or complaints in order to assess and handle cases, collecting and preserving evidence and the chain of custody, testifying in court proceedings, and performing related work.

Minimum of High School diploma or GED. At least probationary certification from the NC CJETSC as a commissioned police officer and successful completion of the appointing agency's designated field training program for newly appointed Campus Police Officers.

Demonstrated competencies associated with the following duties: effective performance of general patrol duties (emergency response, medical, traffic, and service); the ability to perform effective investigations; an understanding of crime prevention and community policing in a university environment; the ability to effectively use and maintain law enforcement equipment.
Completion of a Basic Law Enforcement Training school or a certification that is equivalent to NC Training and Standards Commission.
Applicants with 2 years or greater documented experience as sworn campus, local, state, or federal law enforcement officers may be eligible for appointment at a higher entry rank and level at the hiring agency's discretion as follows:
  • Police Officer II: 2 years of prior experience as a sworn law enforcement officer.
  • Police Officer III: 4 years of prior experience as a sworn law enforcement officer.
  • Master Police Officer I: 6 years of prior experience as a sworn law enforcement
  • Master Police Officer II: 3 years of experience as a Master Police Officer or equivalent within an outside law enforcement agency (equivalent experience at a higher sworn supervisory rank will also be accepted).
  • Master Police Officer III: 6 years of experience as a Master Police Officer or equivalent within an outside law enforcement agency (equivalent experience at a higher sworn supervisory rank will also be accepted).
  • Officer (a graduate or Juris Doctor degree reduces the minimum experience requirement by 1 year).

Required License or Certification
Certification as a law enforcement officer in accordance with the provisions of the North Carolina Criminal Justice Training and Standards Commission. In-state police officer transfers must be currently certified as a law enforcement officer in the state of NC or be eligible for the 96 hour program, which includes passing the state exam in its entirety. Out-of-state candidates must have successfully completed a Basic Law Enforcement Training course accredited by the state of transfer to be considered. Out-of-state police officer transfer applicants must have at least 2 years of full-time, sworn law enforcement experience. Out-of-state candidates cannot have a break in service from the out-of-state agency for more than one year. All out-of-state candidates must complete 96 hours (or more) of training to be eligible for NC Certification and pass the state exam. Please note that federal experience is not recognized by the North Carolina Standards and Training Commission.

Pursuant to North Carolina law, you may qualify for a reduced BLET enrollment provided you meet the following qualifications as established by the NC Criminal Justice Education and Training Standards Commission: Successful completion of military police training program and awarded military police occupational specialty rating. Must have completed military police duties for any branches of service, active or reserve, or the National Guard for not less than two of the five years preceding this application.
