Job description

Position Summary: Under direct supervision, the Medical Assistant assists physicians and nurses in providing care to I-Clinic patients.  The Medical Assistant is responsible for recording and updating medical histories and contact information in patient files, performing standard care procedures like drawing blood, checking vitals, or collecting lab samples, and supporting the daily operations of the clinic. This position requires excellent customer service skills and strong computer literacy. The successful candidate will be comfortable interacting with a diverse range of individuals including those with mental health and substance use challenges. Ability to converse with patients/visitors in Spanish preferred. No smoking workplace.

Mon-Fri, 8am - 5pm

Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

  • Assists physicians and nurses in providing care to Clinic patients.
  • Record and update medical histories and contact information in patient files consistently, accurately and in a timely manner.
  • Performing standard care procedures like drawing blood, checking vitals or collecting lab samples
  • Maintains communication with Clinic Coordinator
  • Participate in scheduled training and meetings, as necessary.
  • Maintain patient medical records and completes appropriate documentation.
  • Maintain a professional and personable demeanor while working with clinic guests in a non-judgmental way.
  • Safeguards patients’ protected health information (PHI).
  • Notify appropriate supervisor and/or manager of any critical incidents or emergencies.
  • Assist with data entry for reporting requirements, including handling patient identifying data.
  • Assist Clinic Coordinator, physicians, and other staff with miscellaneous items.
  • Adheres to professional standards, work rules, policies, procedures, federal, state, and local requirements.
  • Assist other departments with miscellaneous items.
  • Observe and report safety concerns, activities, security breaches and incidents that occur at the site, providing for the security and safety of client property and personnel.
  • Preserves order and may act to enforce regulations and directives in accordance with Santa Maria Hostel’s policies.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Education/Experience:

Associate degree in a medical field preferred. High school diploma or general education degree (GED); at least six months’ direct related experience in and/or training clinical aspects of the job; or equivalent combination of education and experience. Previous experience working in a clinic/healthcare environment is strongly preferred. Annual completion of required training. 

Certificates and Licenses:

Certification as a Medical Assistant, Current CPR and infant CPR certification, first aid and PIAB training required; valid Texas Driver's License.
