What are some common challenges faced by social workers at Urban Welfare Services (UWS), and how can new team members navigate them?

Social workers at Urban Welfare Services (UWS) often work with diverse and underserved populations, which can present challenges such as managing high caseloads, addressing complex client needs, and coping with emotional stress. New team members can navigate these challenges by leveraging support from experienced colleagues, participating in regular supervision sessions, and utilizing available training resources to build resilience. Strong communication skills, self-care practices, and collaboration with interdisciplinary teams also help new staff adapt and thrive in the demanding but rewarding environment of UWS.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a University Welfare Support (UWS) Officer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a University Welfare Support (UWS) Officer, you need a background in social work, counseling, or psychology, often supported by a relevant degree or certification. Familiarity with case management software, mental health assessment tools, and university support systems is typically required. Strong interpersonal communication, empathy, and crisis management skills help UWS Officers stand out when supporting students in need. These skills are crucial for fostering student well-being, ensuring timely support interventions, and promoting a positive campus environment.

Job description

Overview
Are you a Game Leader (GL) or Dungeon Master (DM) who loves working with kids and teens? Writopia Lab, an award-winning 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that runs the country's best creative writing workshops for kids ages 6 to 18, is looking for part-time RPG enthusiasts to run D&D 5e and other role-playing games in-person at our lab on the Upper West Side in Manhattan using Zoom, Roll20, and D&D Beyond.
Since its formation in New York City in 2007, Writopia Lab has grown into a nationwide community of young writers. Our mission is to foster joy, literacy, and critical thinking in children and teens from all backgrounds through creative writing (and gaming!).
Our summer games on the UWS run for week-long sessions, three hours a day in the afternoons Monday through Friday. We are looking for GLs who can commit to four or more weeks in the afternoons between the end of June and the end of August (they do not need to be consecutive weeks).
What Game Leaders Do
Our goal is to develop social and emotional life skills through gaming. Our Game Leaders are half camp counselors (fun, funny, warm, and engaging) and half adventurous creatives who love role playing games and inventive storytelling. Writopia Lab's Game Leaders meet players where they are, providing instruction and support to help new players learn to love RPGs and delivering a next-level gaming experience to those who have already played before.
We train our GLs in our method and we provide adventures for our Game Leaders to run. We provide all the dice, battlemats, and other gaming materials you need to run a fantastic campaign.
Qualifications and Requirements
  • Three years as a Game Leader or Dungeon Master
  • Proficiency running Dungeons & Dragons 5th Edition
  • Proficiency with other RPG systems such as Avatar Legends, Kids on Brooms, and Esper Genesis preferred
  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Experience working with kids and/or teens in a creative environment

Location, Pay, Hours
Location: This is an in-person position at Writopia Lab, 155 West 81st Street, New York, NY
Pay: $25 per hour for leading games; $17 per hour for administrative tasks. Most hours will be paid at the leading games rate.
Hours: Generally 1:00 pm to 4:00 pm Mondays through Fridays.
How to Apply
If you are excited by the idea of joining a community of creatives and working on collaborative storytelling with children and teens, please apply. (Don't forget to attach your resume and cover letter, which should discuss your RPG history!) For more information regarding who we are and what we do here at Writopia Lab, please visit our website at www.writopialab.org.
