Job Description:

Reporting to the Director of Supply Chain, the Purchasing Manager provides leadership and strategic oversight of the purchasing staff and their key operational functions. Responsible for formulating and administering purchasing policies and procedures, ensuring compliance with healthcare procurement standards, and optimizing cost-saving initiatives. Tracks and reports key performance metrics to reduce expenses and improve overall efficiency. Works collaboratively with the Director of Supply Chain to support the procurement component of the hospital’s information systems. Engages with stakeholders and the sourcing team to develop product specifications, sourcing strategies, and pricing relationships that maximize value and operational effectiveness.

  • Oversees the efficient handling of purchase requisitions, analyzing quantity, specifications, delivery requirements and sourcing optimal suppliers.
  • Conducts market research to identify cost-effective, high-quality medical supply sources, ensuring hospital procurement aligns with financial goals.
  • Oversees Buyer team, providing training, leadership and performance evaluations.
  • Manages Buyers in collaborating with requesting departments to clarify purchasing needs, resolve inquiries, and maintain seamless procurement operations.
  • Oversees scanning and documentation of purchase orders for accurate record-keeping and compliance.
  • Oversees expediting of outstanding purchase orders to mitigate supply shortages, keeping departments informed of order statuses.
  • Works closely with clinical teams to define specifications, evaluate product options, and ensure timely delivery of healthcare supplies.
  • Supports capital procurement by preparing solicitation paperwork, bid specifications, and price quotations for medical products.
  • Supports vendor relationship management and collaborates with Supply Chain leadership on pricing negotiations, service agreements and delivery schedules as needed.
  • Oversees vendor interactions, coordinating replacements or returns for   defective or unacceptable items.
  • Directly supervises assigned staff, including hiring, onboarding, training, scheduling, coaching, performance evaluations, disciplinary actions and employee development to ensure achievement of departmental goals and organizational standards.

Required Skills & Qualifications:  

  • Bachelor’s degree in Supply Chain, Business or Healthcare Administration or related field required with a minimum of 5 years of purchasing experience with at least 2 years in a hospital setting.
  • In lieu of Bachelor’s degree, a combination of college education and 9 plus years of relevant purchasing experience with at least 2 years in a hospital setting will be considered.
  • Strong knowledge of healthcare purchasing practices, medical supply chain and healthcare purchasing regulations.
  • Experience with ERP systems, preferably Peoplesoft.
  • Previous management or leadership experience preferred.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage, develop and lead staff including hiring, training, scheduling, coaching and performance evaluations.
  • Strong analytical, organizational and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
  • Excellent negotiation, communication and vendor relationship skills.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications including Word, Excel, PowerPoint.
  • Experience utilizing supply chain and procurement software systems.  
  • Must have excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to build collaborative relationships across departments and with external business partners.
