Job description

Summary
Performs the full range of professional duties required to support the multilingual services program including evaluating the proficiency of interpreters and translators and assigning work; evaluates, costs and monitors projects; advises principals and program managers with respect to multilingual issues.
Qualifications
Required
  • Any combination of education and experience equivalent to a bachelor's degree in education, a language, or a related field.
  • Four (4) years of experience in a language-related field, some of which shall have been in dealing with cross-cultural issues.
    • Advanced degree(s) beyond the minimum degree requirement in a relevant field may be considered for some experience.
  • Knowledge of cross-cultural issues.
  • Ability to provide guidance to culturally diverse personnel.
  • Multilingual oral and written communication skills.
Preferred
  • Experience in a school-based environment.
  • Possession of multilingual skills and multicultural background with dual language proficiency in English and one of the major languages (Arabic, Urdu, Korean, Spanish, or Vietnamese) represented in FCPS.

Major Duties/Essential Functions
  1. Monitors the interpretations and translation section.
  2. Receives and evaluates requests for multilingual support and assigns requests to appropriate interpreters and translators.
  3. Evaluates the proficiency of multilingual interpreters and translators.
  4. Analyzes all documentation for accuracy.
  5. Maintains records of translation services.
  6. Evaluates project requests.
  7. Negotiates acceptance or rejection of a project with the requesting principals or program manager.
  8. Commits financial and human resources to approved projects.
  9. Determines project timeframes.
  10. Provides interpretation and translation services, as needed.
  11. Updates multilingual services program manuals, incorporating regulatory changes and making appropriate suggestions for change to management.
  12. Provides guidance to principals and program managers with respect to multilingual issues, students, and their families.
  13. Represents the multilingual services program with the schools and centers; schedules multilingual services, coordinating with English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) staff, as appropriate.
  14. Provides follow-up services for rescheduling.
  15. Assigns interpreters and translators.
  16. Signs time and attendance forms.
  17. Prepares and maintains reimbursement records for non-contract hourly multilingual/multicultural resource personnel.
  18. Trains interpreters and translators, as appropriate.
  19. Utilizes technology to create new ways to deliver services and maintain information.
  20. May conduct and review elementary and secondary transcript evaluations, including appropriate grade placement.
  21. May assist with determining residency status by conducting evaluation and verification of both immigration and naturalization credentials.
  22. Performs related duties as required or assigned.

This job operates in a professional office environment and has a noise level of mostly low to moderate. This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, filing cabinets, and fax machines.
