What is a hoc?

Hoc positions, often referred to as 'ad hoc' roles, are temporary or as-needed jobs created to address specific tasks or projects within an organization. These roles are not part of the regular staffing structure and may vary in duration and responsibilities. Individuals hired for hoc positions typically possess specialized skills relevant to the assignment, and their employment ends once the project or need is fulfilled. Hoc jobs are common in fields like education, research, and consulting, where flexibility and specialized expertise are required.

What are some common challenges faced by professionals in ad hoc project roles, and how can they be managed effectively?

Professionals working in ad hoc project roles often encounter challenges such as shifting priorities, unclear objectives, and tight deadlines. These roles typically require a high degree of flexibility, quick learning, and strong communication skills to adapt to rapidly changing tasks. To manage these challenges effectively, it's important to regularly clarify expectations with stakeholders, prioritize tasks based on urgency and impact, and maintain open lines of communication with team members. Developing strong organizational habits and being proactive about seeking feedback can also help ensure success in dynamic, ad hoc environments.

Familiarity with compliance management systems, audit tools, and relevant certifications like Certified Compliance & Ethics Professional (CCEP) or Certified Regulatory Compliance Manager (CRCM) is important. Strong leadership, analytical thinking, and effective communication are critical soft skills for this role. These skills and qualifications ensure that organizations operate within legal boundaries, mitigate risks, and foster a culture of ethical conduct.

Job description

Talent Acquisition Specialist

Job Number: 925

This is a remote position.

Ad Hoc is a technology company that empowers organizations to deliver scalable, impactful digital services. Using modern, agile methods, our team creates products that meet people’s needs and transform their experience of government.

Work on things that matter

Our collaborations have shaped some of the defining moments in public-sector service delivery. We’ve helped build products that connect Veterans to tailored services, help millions access affordable health care, and support important programs like Head Start. As we work with agencies to deliver critical services, we’re also changing how the government approaches technology.

Built for a remote life

Our culture, communications, and tools are built for remote work, enabling us to bring together top talent nationwide. At Ad Hoc, remote life empowers our teams to design work environments that fit their lives and that foster flexibility and collaboration to achieve positive outcomes for our customers.

Committed to high expectations and a welcoming culture

Ad Hoc values acceptance, accountability, and humility. We aren’t heroes. We learn from our mistakes and improve the process for the next time. We build small, inclusive teams to collaborate closely with our partners to solve the right problems and deliver software that works.

Our Shared Services team, which includes People Operations, Finance, IT and Security, and Contracts, provides internal services and support across Ad Hoc. Shared Services works to improve efficiency, reduce costs, and enhance the overall quality of services provided to the company's various teams and business units. By streamlining and standardizing support, Shared Services allows teams and business units to focus on their core business functions and achieve greater effectiveness internally and with the agencies they support.

About the Role

As a Talent Acquisition Specialist, you’ll support full-cycle recruiting across a variety of technical and non-technical positions while developing your skills as a trusted recruiting partner.

You’ll work closely with hiring managers, recruiters, and Talent Acquisition leadership to understand hiring needs, source and engage candidates, coordinate interviews, manage candidate communication, and support the offer process.

This is a great opportunity for someone who has built a foundation in recruiting and is ready to take on greater ownership of requisitions while continuing to grow their sourcing, stakeholder management, and full-cycle recruiting skills.

You may also gain exposure to federal government contracting, proposal recruiting, contingent hiring, and proactive talent pipeline development.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Manage assigned requisitions through the recruiting lifecycle, from intake and sourcing through interviews and offer coordination
  • Partner with hiring managers and Talent Acquisition leadership to understand role requirements, candidate profiles, and hiring priorities
  • Source and engage qualified candidates using LinkedIn, sourcing platforms, internal databases, referrals, and other recruiting channels
  • Conduct recruiter screens and evaluate candidates against established role requirements
  • Present qualified candidates to hiring teams with clear and accurate recruiting notes and recommendations
  • Coordinate with candidates and internal stakeholders throughout the interview and selection process
  • Maintain consistent candidate communication and provide a positive candidate experience
  • Maintain accurate candidate, requisition, and pipeline information within the Applicant Tracking System (ATS)
  • Track recruiting activity, candidate sources, interview progress, and other recruiting metrics
  • Build and maintain candidate pipelines for recurring and anticipated hiring needs
  • Participate in recruiting meetings, hiring manager intake sessions, and team planning discussions
  • Identify recruiting challenges, candidate concerns, or hiring blockers and escalate them appropriately
  • Support offer preparation, candidate follow-up, and closing activities in partnership with Talent Acquisition leadership and People Operations
  • Contribute ideas and feedback that improve recruiting processes, candidate experience, and team efficiency

Proposal & Pipeline Support

As you develop in the role, you may also support Ad Hoc’s federal contracting and growth efforts by:

  • Sourcing and engaging candidates for anticipated or pre-award positions
  • Supporting contingent hiring and offer activities
  • Maintaining communication with candidates associated with upcoming contract opportunities
  • Building talent pipelines for priority technical and professional skill sets
  • Supporting recruiting research and pipeline development for proposals and future hiring needs

Basic Qualifications

  • 1-3+ years of recruiting or talent acquisition experience in an agency, in-house, RPO, staffing, or similar environment
  • Experience supporting multiple requisitions or searches simultaneously
  • Experience sourcing and engaging candidates using LinkedIn Recruiter or similar sourcing tools
  • Experience working within an Applicant Tracking System (ATS)
  • Experience conducting candidate screens or participating in candidate evaluation
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail
  • Ability to manage competing priorities and follow through on commitments in a remote environment
  • Comfortable learning new recruiting processes, technologies, and hiring requirements
  • Must be legally authorized to work in the United States without sponsorship, now or in the future

Preferred Qualifications

  • 2+ years of recruiting or talent acquisition experience
  • Experience recruiting for technology, software engineering, product, design, data, DevOps, or other technical roles
  • Experience supporting federal government contracting or government-related hiring
  • Exposure to proposal recruiting, contingent hiring, or pre-award talent pipelines
  • Experience partnering directly with hiring managers
  • Familiarity with labor categories or structured qualification requirements
  • Experience with ClearCompany or a similar ATS
  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent combination of education and professional experience
