Industry UsageDeveloping HL7 interfaces for health data exchangeImplementing and managing EHR integrations

While both roles involve healthcare IT and HL7 standards, the Hl7 Interface Developer primarily focuses on designing and coding HL7 interfaces, whereas the EHR Integration Specialist manages broader EHR system integrations, including HL7 but also other protocols and systems.

What Is an HL7 Interface Developer?

HL7 is an international set of standards that govern how medical information, such as patient health records or data, can be transferred between software applications. As an HL7 interface developer, your main duties are to design and code interfaces for healthcare professionals to use that ensure they are meeting all HL7 standards. Your responsibilities include writing scripts and testing software interfaces to ensure that they meet client specifications, all while adhering to standards that protect medical privacy and other regulations.

What are HL7 Interface Developers?

HL7 Interface Developers are professionals who design, build, and maintain software interfaces that enable healthcare systems to exchange information using the HL7 (Health Level Seven) standards. They ensure seamless communication and data integration between different healthcare applications, such as Electronic Health Records (EHRs), laboratory systems, and billing platforms. Their work helps healthcare organizations improve data accuracy, streamline workflows, and comply with regulatory requirements. HL7 Interface Developers typically have strong programming skills and a solid understanding of healthcare data protocols.

What are some common challenges faced by HL7 Interface Developers when integrating healthcare systems?

HL7 Interface Developers often encounter challenges related to data standardization and compatibility among different healthcare systems. Variations in HL7 message implementations across vendors can lead to data mapping and transformation issues, requiring custom logic to ensure accurate communication. Additionally, troubleshooting and resolving message errors or connectivity problems with multiple stakeholders can be complex and time-consuming. Effective collaboration with clinical, technical, and vendor teams is essential to address these integration challenges and maintain seamless data exchange.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an HL7 Interface Developer, and why are they important?

To thrive as an HL7 Interface Developer, you need a solid understanding of HL7 messaging standards, healthcare data integration, and programming skills, often supported by a degree in computer science or a related field. Familiarity with interface engines such as Mirth Connect, Cloverleaf, or Rhapsody, and experience with EHR systems are typically required. Strong problem-solving abilities, attention to detail, and effective communication are crucial soft skills for collaborating with clinical and technical teams. Mastering these competencies ensures seamless data exchange, regulatory compliance, and optimal interoperability within healthcare environments.

Job description

Metriport Job Opportunity

Metriport is an open-source data intelligence platform that helps healthcare organizations access and exchange patient data in real-time. We integrate with all major US healthcare IT systems and tap into comprehensive medical data for 300+ million individuals.

We've found product-market fit with multi-million ARR, 100+ customers (including Amazon, Color, and Strive Health), backing from top VCs, and years of runway. We're ready to scale. We're a tight-knit, high-performing team of mostly former founders (including two YC alumni). We're engineering-heavy, operate with minimal bureaucracy and high autonomy, and hire based on competence, not prestige. We push hardโ€”founders work six days a week from our SF officeโ€”but give everyone freedom to craft their schedule. We measure output and we're committed to sustainable intensity.

About You

You're obsessed with automating repetitive tasks โ€” your first instinct when you see a manual process is "how do I make this run by itself?" At Metriport, you'll own the internal tooling that keeps our company moving fast. You'll spot the friction, build the fix, and ship it โ€” without waiting to be asked.

  • You're entrepreneurial-minded, with the drive to push work forward even when it's not anyone else's top priority.
  • You have strong interpersonal skills and are comfortable working directly with stakeholders across Eng, Ops, and business teams to understand their needs and translate them into working solutions.
  • You're a hacker at heart โ€” you get excited about wiring together services that weren't built to talk to each other, and you know how to make it work securely and at scale.
  • You keep security top of mind. We work with sensitive healthcare data, and you treat that seriously โ€” vetting third-party integrations, applying least-privilege thinking, and never cutting corners that could expose PHI.
  • You follow the AI tooling space closely and try to use it to solve real business problems, but you have the judgment to know what's appropriate for an enterprise context and what's a hard no.
  • You care about outcomes over elegance. A Slack bot that saves the Ops team an hour a day is worth more than a perfect abstraction nobody uses.
What You'll Be Doing

After ramping up on our internal tools and workflows, you'll own the systems that make our teams more efficient and more secure. Day to day, this looks like:

  • Automating cross functional processes: many of our internal processes are still manual and error prone; you'll work with non-engineering functions at Metriport to automate away their friction within the company
  • Building Automations End-to-End: Designing and shipping integrations between our internal and third-party systems โ€” from scoping the requirement with a stakeholder, to deploying a working solution, to making sure it doesn't break quietly.
  • Improving Developer Experience and Onboarding: Automating local environment setup for new engineers, improving CICD speed, reducing the time-to-productive from hours to minutes.
  • Evaluating and Adopting New Tools: Researching integration platforms (Zapier, n8n, Make, etc.) and AI productivity tools, working with the Security team to assess their security posture, and rolling them out in a way that meets our compliance requirements.
  • Reporting: Automating recurring reports by pulling from AWS Athena, REST APIs, and other data sources โ€” so the team gets accurate data without manual effort every month.
  • Team alignment: Participating in a daily 30-minute remote standup at 7:30 AM PST Monโ€“Fri (our only regular mandatory meeting).
Requirements
  • 3+ years of experience in a software engineering, automation, or internal tools role โ€” ideally at a startup where you wore multiple hats.
  • TypeScript proficiency: Our entire stack is TypeScript. You write clean, maintainable TS without hand-holding.
  • React proficiency: Our internal operations tool is React-based. You can build and extend UI components to surface new workflows.
  • Integration experience: Hands-on experience connecting APIs, webhooks, and third-party services. You deeply understand REST, OAuth, mTLS, websockets and other integration technologies and know when and how to use them.
  • Security-aware mindset: You understand what it means to handle sensitive data responsibly โ€” secrets management, scoped permissions, secure credential storage. You don't need to be told to think about this.
  • Self-directed: You're comfortable working on projects where you're the only one tracking progress. You create urgency for yourself.
  • Location: San Francisco / Bay Area (or willing to relocate).
Nice to Have
  • Experience building internal dashboards, admin tooling, or ops automation in a B2B SaaS environment.
  • Familiarity with our tooling ecosystem: AWS (Athena, Lambda, etc.), Slack, GitHub Actions, Pylon, PostHog, GSuite.
  • Experience with integration platforms like Zapier, n8n, or Make.
  • Exposure to healthcare data (FHIR, HL7, PHI handling) โ€” understanding the stakes is a significant advantage.
  • Experience using LLMs or AI agents to automate workflows (prompt engineering, API integration, tool use).
Benefits
  • Competitive equity + compensation package
  • Full family Platinum health insurance, dental, and vision coverage
  • 401(k) retirement plan + matching
  • Flexible work from home or in-office
  • Healthy lunches are complimentary when working in-office (and breakfast + dinners as needed)
  • Quarterly company off-sites with the team
  • MacBook provided by us
  • Unlimited PTO (we work hard, but trust you to take time you need to be at your best) โ€

On the frontend, we use React - on the backend, we rely on Node.js and TypeScript for writing core business logic. We use AWS cloud services and manage our infrastructure as code with AWS CDK. Data lives in PostgreSQL, DynamoDB, S3, Snowflake, FHIR server, and more. Our Ops teams use the main tools/services used by successful startups. We are looking for a generalist who can help us scale the company.
