How much do high purity welding jobs pay per hour?

As of Aug 14, 2026, the average hourly pay for high purity welding in the United States is $23.26, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $18.51 and $26.20 per hour, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What is high purity welding?

High purity welding is a specialized welding process used to join materials that require minimal contamination, such as in semiconductor or pharmaceutical manufacturing. It involves strict control of the environment, often using inert gases and cleanroom conditions, and requires precise techniques and certifications to ensure the purity of the welds.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a high purity welder, and why are they important?

To thrive as a High Purity Welder, you need advanced welding skills, knowledge of industry standards (such as ASME or AWS), and experience with stainless steel and other corrosion-resistant alloys, often supported by relevant certifications. Familiarity with orbital welding machines, tube bending equipment, and various inspection tools is typically required. Attention to detail, steady hand-eye coordination, and the ability to work effectively as part of a team are standout soft skills. These competencies are essential to ensure contaminant-free welds and meet strict safety and quality requirements in industries like pharmaceuticals and semiconductors.

What is the difference between High Purity Welding vs Cleanroom Welding?

AspectHigh Purity WeldingCleanroom Welding
CertificationsWelding certifications, specialized in inert gas and contamination controlWelding certifications, focus on contamination prevention
Work EnvironmentClean, controlled environments with strict contamination controlsCleanroom settings with controlled particulate levels
Industry UsagePharmaceutical, semiconductor, biotech industriesElectronics, aerospace, pharmaceutical manufacturing

High Purity Welding and Cleanroom Welding both require strict contamination control and specialized certifications. While High Purity Welding focuses on welding in ultra-clean environments for industries like pharmaceuticals and semiconductors, Cleanroom Welding emphasizes maintaining particulate control in cleanroom settings across various high-tech industries. Both roles demand precision and adherence to strict standards, but their specific environments and industry applications differ slightly.

What are typical challenges faced by high purity welders when working in cleanroom environments?

High purity welders often face the challenge of maintaining strict cleanliness standards while performing precise welds in cleanroom settings. This includes wearing specialized protective clothing, following rigorous protocols to avoid contamination, and ensuring that all tools and materials are meticulously cleaned before use. Additionally, welders must adapt to controlled environments with limited space and sometimes awkward positions, all while producing flawless welds that meet stringent industry specifications. Collaborating closely with quality assurance teams and engineers is also essential to uphold the required purity standards.

SPECIALTY FITTERS INC

Job description

WHO WE ARE:
  • Specialty Fitters, Inc. (SFI) is an industrial gas piping contractor based in Elyria, Ohio. We build high-purity and specialty gas systems for industrial and federal research facilities across Northeast Ohio — including work at NASA test facilities — the kind of work where the weld gets inspected, documented, and has to be right the first time.
WHO WE'RE LOOKING FOR:
  • A TIG welder who takes pride in clean, full-penetration pipe welds. Our day-to-day work is manual GTAW on stainless steel (316L/304L) pipe and tubing — much of it schedule 80, open-root butt welds with argon back purge, welded to ASME Section IX / B31.3 standards. Some work involves nickel alloys (Monel) and specialty fittings where cleanliness and fit-up discipline matter as much as the arc. Shop fabrication in Elyria plus local field installation.
YOU SHOULD BE COMFORTABLE WITH:
  • Manual GTAW (TIG) on stainless pipe — open root, back purge, stringer or small/light weave technique - Reading welding procedures (WPS) and working to them - Welds that get visually inspected and may see NDE — no grinder-finish cover-ups - Keeping high-purity work clean: no oil, no contamination, care between passes - Shop and field work, all positions (6G capability)
  • PLUSES (NOT REQUIRED): experience with high-purity/aerospace/cryogenic systems, orbital or sanitary tube work, Monel/nickel alloys, B31.3 process piping background, pipefitting skills.
  • THE WELD TEST Before hire, you'll weld a 2" schedule 80 316L pipe butt weld in the GTAW process, inspected and accepted by our Director of Operations. Pass that, and we'll both know you belong here.
  • PAY & BENEFITS (W-2) - $35 - 50/hour based on skill and experience — show us more, earn more - Overtime available (hours vary by project) - Health insurance, dental, 401(k) - Semi-annual bonuses - Professional growth and educational opportunities — we invest in people who invest in the trade - SFI provides all necessary tools and equipment
  • REQUIREMENTS - Must pass drug and alcohol screening - Must have a clean background check - Local applicants only — within roughly 50 miles / one hour of Elyria, OH. This is NOT a per diem contract; out-of-area applicants must provide their own housing. - Hiring immediately
***ALSO AVAILABLE — TEMPORARY 1099 PIPEFITTER/WELDER (PREVAILING WAGE)
We are also open to temporary 1099 pipefitter/welder help at prevailing wage rates ($62-63/hour, no benefits) for project-based work.
IF YOU ARE APPLYING FOR THE 1099 TEMPORARY ROLE, YOU MUST WRITE THIS EXACT LINE IN YOUR APPLICATION NOTES OR EMAIL SUBJECT: Welder - 1099 - Temp 1099

Applicants must additionally have: - A clean background check - The ability to access a federal facility (badging/security screening) - The ability to pass possible random drug and alcohol tests Same weld test applies. Same local-only rule applies.
HOW TO APPLY:
Apply directly through this job posting or email office@specialtyfitters.com and tell us about your welding experience — including pipe sizes, materials, processes, and the type of work you've performed.
If you are applying for the temporary 1099 prevailing-wage position, you MUST write the following in your application notes:

Welder - 1099 - Temp

Please also include your availability to complete an in-person weld test at our Elyria, Ohio facility.
Specialty Fitters, Inc. is an equal opportunity employer.
Benefits:
  • 401(k)
  • Dental insurance
  • Health insurance
  • Life insurance
  • Paid time off
  • Professional development assistance
