How much do orbital welding jobs pay per year?

As of Aug 12, 2026, the average yearly pay for orbital welding in the United States is $61,549.00, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $50,000.00 and $64,000.00 per year, depending on experience, location, and employer.

Is orbital welding in demand?

Orbital welding is in steady demand in industries such as aerospace, oil and gas, and manufacturing, where high-quality, precise welds are required. Skilled orbital welders with certifications and knowledge of automation tools are sought after due to the specialized nature of the work and the need for safety and compliance standards.

What is the difference between Orbital Welding vs Pipe Welder?

AspectOrbital WeldingPipe Welder
CertificationsCertified Welding Inspector (CWI), orbital welding certificationsAWS Certified Welder, pipe welding certifications
Work EnvironmentAutomated or semi-automated welding in controlled settingsManual welding on construction sites or industrial plants
Industry UsageOil & gas, aerospace, pharmaceutical manufacturingOil & gas, construction, industrial piping

Orbital welders specialize in automated welding of pipes using specialized equipment, often in controlled environments. Pipe welders perform manual welding on pipes in various settings. While both roles involve pipe welding, orbital welding emphasizes precision, automation, and consistency, whereas pipe welding involves manual skill and adaptability to different environments.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an orbital welder, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Orbital Welder, you need expertise in welding techniques, blueprint reading, and a solid understanding of metallurgy, often backed by a welding certification such as AWS or ASME. Proficiency in operating orbital welding machines, using TIG welding equipment, and working with pipe-cutting and alignment systems is vital. Attention to detail, strong problem-solving abilities, and effective communication are crucial soft skills for ensuring high-quality welds and collaborating with teams. These skills and qualities guarantee precise, reliable welds in critical industries like aerospace and pharmaceuticals, where safety and consistency are paramount.

What are orbital welding jobs?

Jobs that require orbital welding include fabricator, high purity welder, and PPI welder positions. In these positions, you use a TIG welder, arc machine, or a similar piece of equipment to fabricate structures. You cut and then tack tubular components together, create final welds, and inspect the face of each weld to ensure its integrity. You also document compliance with tolerances when necessary, and you perform other related duties like keeping your worksite clean and safe and maintaining your tools and equipment. When required, you also adhere to and fulfill your responsibilities according to ASME/BPE and GMP guidelines.

What is orbital welding?

Orbital welding is a specialized automated welding process in which the welding arc rotates 360 degrees around a static workpiece, typically a pipe or tube. This technique ensures high-quality, consistent welds and is commonly used in industries requiring precision, such as aerospace, pharmaceuticals, and semiconductor manufacturing. Orbital welding helps reduce human error, improves productivity, and enables welds in difficult or hard-to-reach areas. Operators use computer-controlled equipment to manage parameters such as speed, heat, and angle to achieve optimal results.

What are some common challenges faced by orbital welding technicians and how can they be overcome?

Orbital welding technicians often encounter challenges such as maintaining precise weld quality in difficult-to-access areas and managing the setup of automated equipment for different pipe sizes and materials. Working in controlled environments, such as cleanrooms or confined spaces, can also require strict adherence to safety protocols. Overcoming these challenges involves continuous training on equipment, attention to detail during setup, and close communication with quality inspectors and project engineers. Developing strong troubleshooting skills and staying current with industry standards can help technicians perform consistently high-quality welds.
