Helpdesk Assistant information

What is a helpdesk assistant?

Helpdesk Assistants are professionals who provide technical support and assistance to users experiencing computer or software-related issues. They serve as the first point of contact for troubleshooting problems, answering questions, and resolving user concerns, either in person, over the phone, or via email. Their responsibilities often include logging support tickets, diagnosing issues, and escalating complex problems to higher-level IT staff when necessary. Helpdesk Assistants play a crucial role in maintaining smooth IT operations within an organization.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a helpdesk assistant?

To thrive as a Helpdesk Assistant, you need a solid understanding of computer hardware, software troubleshooting, and general IT support, typically supported by a diploma or certification in information technology. Familiarity with ticketing systems, remote support tools, and knowledge bases such as ServiceNow or Zendesk is commonly required. Strong communication skills, patience, and problem-solving abilities set standout performers apart in this role. These skills and qualities are vital to efficiently resolve technical issues and ensure user satisfaction in a fast-paced support environment.

What are some common challenges faced by helpdesk assistants, and how can they be managed effectively?

Helpdesk Assistants often encounter high volumes of support requests and must efficiently prioritize issues while maintaining a positive attitude. Balancing multiple tasks, dealing with frustrated users, and addressing technical problems in a timely manner can be challenging. Successful Helpdesk Assistants develop strong communication skills, utilize ticketing systems for organization, and continually update their technical knowledge. Building rapport with team members and leveraging internal resources also help in managing workload and providing quality service.

Job description

ZAGG is looking for a Helpdesk Technician who enjoys solving problems, helping people, and digging deeper when the answer isn't obvious.
You'll support employees across the organization with hardware, software, access, connectivity, and Microsoft 365 issues while gaining hands-on exposure to Entra ID, Active Directory, endpoint management, networking, automation, and enterprise infrastructure.
This isn't a role where you'll spend all day resetting passwords. You'll work alongside an experienced infrastructure team and have opportunities to grow into more advanced technical responsibilities.
What You'll Do
  • Troubleshoot Windows, macOS, Outlook, Teams, VPN, application, and connectivity issues
  • Provide onsite and remote technical support
  • Create, modify, and disable accounts in Microsoft Entra ID and Active Directory
  • Troubleshoot MFA, passwords, permissions, security groups, and application access
  • Configure and deploy laptops, desktops, monitors, docking stations, and mobile devices
  • Support conference rooms, Teams Rooms, printers, scanners, and workplace technology
  • Diagnose basic Wi-Fi, DNS, DHCP, TCP/IP, and wired network issues
  • Use Atera or similar RMM tools to deploy software, run scripts, and resolve issues at scale
  • Coordinate IT onboarding and offboarding
  • Track tickets, root causes, and resolutions in Jira
  • Maintain Confluence documentation and IT runbooks
  • Assist senior IT staff with infrastructure-related escalations
  • Participate in a rotating after-hours on-call schedule

What We're Looking For
You don't need to know everything. We want someone who knows how to troubleshoot, investigate, learn, and follow through.
You'll likely be successful if you have:
  • 2-7 years of IT support, desktop support, or helpdesk experience
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft 365
  • Hands-on experience with Microsoft Entra ID / Azure AD
  • Exposure to Active Directory and Group Policy
  • Experience with ticketing and documentation platforms such as Jira and Confluence
  • Basic knowledge of DNS, DHCP, and TCP/IP
  • Strong troubleshooting and communication skills
  • A track record of owning issues through resolution
  • Ability to lift workstation equipment up to 40 lbs
  • High school diploma or equivalent

Nice to Have
  • Experience with Atera or another RMM platform
  • Windows and macOS support experience
  • MDM or mobile carrier management experience
  • CompTIA A+, Network+, or ITIL certification
  • Exposure to Azure or AWS
  • Experience supporting a multi-site, retail, or manufacturing organization

Why ZAGG?
You'll join a small, experienced infrastructure team, which means your work will be visible and you'll have access to technologies and projects beyond traditional helpdesk support.
As you grow, you'll have opportunities to gain additional experience with Azure, AWS, networking, Microsoft 365, identity management, virtualization, and automation.
ZAGG creates products that protect and power the devices people rely on every day, including brands such as ZAGG, InvisibleShield, and mophie. Our IT team plays a critical role in keeping that business connected and productive.
If you're looking for a helpdesk role that can become much more than a helpdesk role, we'd like to meet you.
