A Hearing Tech, or Hearing Technician, assists audiologists in evaluating and managing patients with hearing concerns. They perform hearing tests, maintain and fit hearing aids, and educate patients on device usage. Hearing Techs also handle administrative tasks, such as scheduling appointments and maintaining patient records. The role requires strong communication skills and technical knowledge of hearing equipment.
Hearing Techs generally assist audiologists with administering hearing tests, maintaining and calibrating audiology equipment, and preparing patients for evaluations. Duties often include making ear impressions, fitting hearing aids, providing basic maintenance or repairs, and educating patients on device care. You may also handle patient records, perform equipment troubleshooting, and assist with follow-up appointments. This hands-on, varied work ensures each patient receives attentive, high-quality care and supports the daily workflow of busy hearing clinics.
To thrive as a Hearing Tech, you need a solid understanding of audiology procedures, hearing aid technology, and patient care, often supported by a certificate or associate degree in hearing instrument sciences or a related field. Competence with audiometric equipment, hearing aid fitting software, and ear impression materials is essential, along with possible state licensure.
