Healthshare information

How does working in a Healthshare organization differ from traditional health insurance companies in terms of daily responsibilities and team collaboration?

In a Healthshare organization, daily responsibilities often involve facilitating member-to-member sharing of healthcare costs, educating members about eligible expenses, and ensuring compliance with organizational guidelines rather than regulated insurance policies. Team collaboration is typically close-knit, with frequent interaction between member services, claims processors, and healthcare provider liaisons to ensure timely and accurate sharing. Employees may also engage in community outreach and education, as Healthshare entities emphasize fostering a sense of community among members. This environment can offer a greater focus on service, transparency, and member engagement compared to traditional insurance companies.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Health Information Specialist, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Health Information Specialist, you need a solid understanding of medical terminology, health data management, and typically an associate’s or bachelor’s degree in health information management. Familiarity with electronic health record (EHR) systems, coding software (like ICD-10, CPT), and relevant certifications such as RHIT or RHIA are commonly required. Attention to detail, strong organizational skills, and the ability to maintain confidentiality help professionals excel in this field. These skills ensure accurate and secure management of patient information, supporting effective healthcare delivery and regulatory compliance.

What is a Healthshare?

A Healthshare, also known as a health care sharing ministry, is an organization where members share medical expenses among themselves instead of paying premiums to a traditional health insurance company. Members typically pay a monthly share, and when medical needs arise, the costs are distributed among members according to the organization's guidelines. Healthshares often have religious or ethical components and may not cover all types of medical services. They are not considered insurance and may have limitations on coverage, but can be a more affordable option for some people.

What is the difference between Healthshare vs Medical Assistant?

AspectHealthshare
CertificationsTypically requires health insurance or healthcare sharing program knowledge, not formal medical certifications
Work EnvironmentAdministrative, customer service, and member support settings
Employer & IndustryHealthcare sharing organizations, insurance companies, or healthcare providers
Common Search IntentUnderstanding healthcare sharing roles, insurance support, or patient advocacy

Healthshare roles focus on supporting healthcare sharing programs, customer service, and administrative tasks. In contrast, Medical Assistants perform clinical and administrative duties directly supporting patient care. While both work within the healthcare industry, their responsibilities, certifications, and work environments differ significantly.

Job description

InterSystems HealthShare seeks strong product leaders to help create the next generation of solutions to highly important health and healthcare issues.

InterSystems HealthShare is the premier health interoperability and innovation platform, providing unique solutions for today's widely distributed healthcare in which a single patient may connect to many providers at many locations using many different information systems.  We combine and unify data from thousands of sources including all major electronic health records, social determinants, claims processors, public health, IoT devices, patient self-care and outcomes measures, and many more onto a flexible and powerful data platform.  We transform, summarize, analyze, and communicate that information in many ways to address key clinical, strategic and operational problems. HealthShare provides a wide variety of clinical and operational solutions to a rapidly growing list of customers in the US and internationally, including providers, public health systems, state and national health organizations, health information exchanges, and development partners.

The HealthShare team is looking for an experienced Product Manager with deep roots in healthcare IT and interoperability. As a member of our team, this position will own the roadmap and strategy for standards-based interoperability support for the HealthShare product platform as well as governance over the clinical and claims data models within our products. The product manager will also act as the scrum product owner for one development team.

Responsibilities:

  • Participate in and/or lead the strategic direction, feature design, user interaction, requirements, and roadmap of one or more products and solutions
  • Participate as product owner on an Agile development team, working with software development, implementation, testing, support, sales, and field engineering team members to bring new features and products to successful release
  • Communicate with current and potential customers on a regular basis to understand their processes and needs - to translate those into new product requirements, understand needed changes over time, and help customers get the greatest value from HealthShare solutions
  • Represent the "voice of the customer" internally in guiding product design and development
  • Collaborate on overall HealthShare product strategy, roadmap, and cohesiveness with colleagues on the Product Management team possessing a range of health and technology expertise
  • Serve as an internal subject matter expert in one or more health, technology and/or informatics domain areas
  • Understand and advise internal and external audiences on relevant industry trends, including new products, scientific and medical advances, regulatory requirements and changes in practice
  • Participate in studies of the impact of HealthShare solutions on quality, safety, and efficiency
  • Participate in the professional community, including attendance at national and international conferences

The ideal candidate will bring the following:

  • 5-10 years of product management experience
  • Experience working with application design at an in-depth level, in industry or with a healthcare organization
  • Demonstrated success in helping envision, design and bring products to completion
  • Experience working with customers or stakeholders to understand and refine product needs at all stages of product development
  • Experience with healthcare operations, information technology applications, data integration and interoperability, and analytics.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Experience presenting to both technical and business-oriented audiences.
  • Ability to work successfully in both team and individual settings, with limited supervision.
  • Experience with one or more of the following healthcare standards/technologies: HL7 V2, CDA, FHIR, X12, IHE XDS, XCA, XDR, etc. OMOP, OpenEHR.

Education:

  • BS in health, technical, or business area or comparable experience required.
  • MBA, MPH, MHA, or similar degree preferred.
