A Healthcare Architecture job involves designing and planning medical facilities such as hospitals, clinics, and healthcare centers to ensure they are functional, safe, and efficient. Professionals in this field collaborate with healthcare providers to create spaces that enhance patient care, support medical workflows, and comply with regulations. They consider factors like infection control, accessibility, and technology integration in their designs. Their goal is to create environments that promote healing, efficiency, and adaptability for future healthcare needs.

What are common challenges faced by professionals working in healthcare architecture?

Professionals in Healthcare Architecture often encounter challenges such as integrating complex medical equipment requirements, meeting strict regulatory standards, and ensuring patient-centered design within budget and schedule constraints. Balancing the needs of diverse stakeholders—including healthcare providers, administrators, and patients—can be demanding but is essential for project success. Additionally, adapting designs to rapidly evolving healthcare technologies and workflows requires continuous learning and flexibility. Overcoming these challenges is rewarding, as it directly contributes to creating safe, efficient environments that support patient care and staff productivity.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in healthcare architecture, and why are they important?

To thrive in Healthcare Architecture, you need a solid background in architectural design, knowledge of healthcare facility standards, and typically a professional degree in architecture with relevant licensure. Job description

Petersen Kolberg & Associates (PKA) is a regional architectural firm located in Portland, Oregon with a strong focus in the healthcare industry. We are currently seeking an experienced Project Manager (PM) who can work with our diverse healthcare client base and lead successful design and construction projects. PKA is looking for an individual who can manage projects with clients; meaning someone comfortable working with healthcare leadership, leading design efforts with user groups, and participating in the construction delivery process.

While PKA’s home office is in Portland, OR, this position would be remote in Seattle, WA to support projects located in the Washington region. There would be occasional expectation to work in person at client facilities and attend in person site visits in the Washington region. This would not preclude working on healthcare projects in Oregon as well.

The primary function of the PM will be to lead design and manage projects. The expectation is that this individual will be a common contact for the client, will manage significant aspects of the project design, medical planning, and construction administration, and will coordinate and lead the internal drafting and production teams. The PM would possess qualifications that include:

  • 5+ years of experience leading multidisciplinary teams for relevant healthcare-focused clients and facilities.
  • Professional degree in architecture from an accredited program.
  • Licensure preferred but not required.
  • Capability to be the PKA representative for certain clients.
  • Experience sustaining and growing client business is desirable.
  • Experience participating in interview teams, developing RFP responses, master facility planning, program development, Lean project delivery, patient-centered design, building design and detailing, and construction administration is desirable.

Other minimum qualifications include:

  • Knowledge of medical planning and modern healthcare delivery.
  • Understanding of Facility Guidelines Institute rules, as well as relevant NFPA codes.
  • Qualified candidates must be able to multi-task and manage multiple projects, have keen attention to detail, and be able to communicate (verbally, written, and graphically) exceptionally well.
  • LEED accreditation, AHP membership, EDAC, or other related activities are beneficial.

PKA is a dynamic and collaborative work environment that encourages excellence and client service. Our culture requires an individual in this position to take ownership of projects with team participation and contribution. PKA is excited about adding talented, driven, and highly productive staff to our team!

PKA offers a competitive salary and comprehensive benefits package including:

  • medical
  • dental
  • vision
  • supplemental life insurance
  • 401(k) plan with company match up to 3% of salary
  • paid time off (PTO)
