Head Spa information

What is a head spa?

A Head Spa is a specialized salon treatment focused on the health and relaxation of the scalp, hair, and mind. It typically involves a combination of scalp massage, cleansing, exfoliation, and deep conditioning treatments using various oils and products. The goal is to improve scalp circulation, relieve stress, promote hair growth, and enhance the overall condition of the hair. Head Spa treatments are popular for their therapeutic benefits and luxurious, spa-like experience.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a head spa therapist, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Head Spa Therapist, you need a solid understanding of scalp anatomy, hair care techniques, and relevant cosmetology or massage therapy certifications. Familiarity with specialized spa equipment, scalp analysis tools, and professional hair and skincare products is typically required. Exceptional interpersonal skills, attention to detail, and a calming presence help foster client trust and relaxation. These competencies are crucial for delivering effective treatments, ensuring client satisfaction, and maintaining high standards of hygiene and safety in the spa environment.

What are some common challenges faced by professionals working in a head spa, and how can they be addressed?

Professionals in a head spa often encounter challenges such as managing diverse client expectations, maintaining strict hygiene standards, and staying updated on the latest scalp care techniques. Balancing personalized service with efficient time management is key, especially during busy periods. Addressing these challenges involves ongoing training, clear communication with clients, and a commitment to continuous learning about new products and methods. Many head spas also foster a collaborative team environment, where staff regularly share tips and feedback to support each other's growth.

What is the difference between Head Spa vs Hair Therapist?

AspectHead SpaHair Therapist
CredentialsTypically no formal certification required, but specialized training is commonRequires cosmetology or hairdressing license
Work EnvironmentSpas, wellness centers, salons focusing on relaxation and scalp healthSalons, clinics, or salons focusing on hair and scalp treatments
Employer & IndustryWellness and spa industry, beauty salonsHair salons, beauty clinics, dermatology clinics
Services OfferedScalp massage, relaxation treatments, scalp cleansingHair treatments, scalp analysis, hair and scalp health advice

While both Head Spa and Hair Therapist focus on scalp and hair health, Head Spa emphasizes relaxation and wellness treatments, often in spa settings, whereas Hair Therapists primarily provide hair and scalp treatments in salons with a focus on hair health and styling.

What qualifications do you need for a head spa?

To work as a head spa therapist, relevant qualifications typically include a cosmetology or massage therapy license, along with specialized training in scalp and hair treatments. Good communication skills, knowledge of hair and scalp health, and experience with relaxation techniques are also important for this role.

Japanese Head Spa & Scalp Care Specialist

ROOT Head Spa

Los Angeles, CA โ€ข On-site

$19 - $21/hr

Full-time

Re-posted 10 days ago

Job description

About the role

We are looking for a licensed cosmetologist who enjoys creating exceptional guest experiences through thoughtful service, scalp care and wellness. If you've worked as a hairstylist, shampoo specialist, salon stylist, head spa practitioner, spa therapist or luxury service provider, this role may be an excellent fit.

Perfect for candidates with experience in: salons, spas, beauty retail, esthetics, luxury hospitality, boutique hotels, wellness clinics, concierge services or premium customer service.

Build a specialty beyond the traditional salon chair

ROOT Head Spa is creating a new standard for scalp health, restorative care, modern hospitality and professional homecare in Los Angeles. We are looking for licensed California cosmetologists who enjoy helping people feel calm, comfortable and genuinely cared for. This position may be especially meaningful for someone who loves shampooing, scalp care, product knowledge and the wellness side of the beauty industry - and wants to develop a specialty beyond traditional cutting and color.

As a Japanese Head Spa and Scalp Care Specialist, known within ROOT as a Head Spa Artisan, you will deliver structured head spa experiences using professional scalp-care products, intentional touch, water rituals and carefully developed treatment protocols. Your technical skills matter, but so does the way you make people feel.

Required qualifications

  • Active California cosmetologist licence in good standing.
  • Legally authorized to work in the United States.
  • Comfortable performing shampooing, cleansing and scalp-care services.
  • Available for the required schedule, including evenings and weekends as assigned.
  • Able to complete mandatory, paid ROOT and YUME training.
  • Able to follow detailed treatment protocols, sanitation standards and guest-safety requirements.
  • Able to stand for extended periods and perform hands-on services throughout a shift.
  • Comfortable discussing professional products and home-care routines with guests.
  • Willing to contribute to service, rebooking and retail goals.

Preferred experience and assets

  • Experience using Zenoti or other salon booking software.
  • Professional haircare or scalp-care product knowledge.
  • Salon, spa, head spa, shampoo or wellness experience.
  • Experience recommending professional products based on guest needs.
  • Luxury hospitality or high-touch customer-service experience.
  • Interest in scalp wellness and Japanese head spa techniques.

This job may be for you if...

You take pride in making people feel better than they did when they arrived. You enjoy working with your hands and refining small details. You understand that a calm experience comes from preparation, presence and consistency.

You are calm, warm and quietly enthusiastic. You enjoy connecting with guests, but you do not need to fill every moment with conversation. You know how to read the room and understand when someone wants education, reassurance or simply a chance to rest.

You enjoy product knowledge and helping guests make confident home-care choices. You do not see retail as selling something. You see it as completing the service with honest education and appropriate recommendations.

What you will do

  • Deliver ROOT head spa and scalp-care services according to approved protocols.
  • Review guest treatment information before each service.
  • Prepare the room, linens, equipment and products.
  • Perform shampooing, scalp cleansing, product application and approved relaxation techniques.
  • Manage water temperature, pressure, guest positioning and service rhythm.
  • Recognize sensitivities, contraindications and concerns requiring escalation.
  • Maintain sanitation, disinfection and equipment-care procedures.
  • Communicate relevant observations to the Scalp Analysis Guide and leadership team.
  • Explain the products used and recommend appropriate home care.
  • Support rebooking and future treatment planning.
  • Maintain accurate service and guest notes in Zenoti or other salon booking software.
  • Participate in product education, technical coaching and team training.

Hospitality at ROOT

Hospitality is not limited to the reception desk. As an Artisan, you help the guest feel safe, comfortable and cared for throughout the treatment. That includes how you greet them, prepare the room, explain the service, manage their comfort and complete the handoff.

We are looking for someone who can deliver premium care without feeling stiff, scripted or overly formal. The right energy is calm, attentive and genuine.

Retail and home-care expectations

  • Learn the features and benefits of ROOT's professional products.
  • Understand which products were used and why.
  • Explain home-care recommendations in simple language.
  • Make appropriate recommendations without pressure.
  • Record relevant product and routine information in the guest profile.
  • Contribute to individual and shared retail goals.
  • Participate in ongoing product-knowledge education.

Growth, Recognition & Career Development

At ROOT, we believe professional growth begins with personal growth.

We are committed to creating an environment where people feel supported, challenged and inspired to become the best version of themselves. Through continuous learning, meaningful feedback and shared experiences, we help our team members build confidence, develop mastery and grow as both professionals and people.

Our growth bands provide a visible pathway for development, recognizing growth in skill, contribution, leadership and guest care. Our goal is to help you build a meaningful career, not just hold a position.

Join ROOT

Every great guest experience begins with the right team. It begins with people like you.

Immediate openings are available. Paid training begins this summer, with our Los Angeles location opening in early fall.

We are ready to meet you.

About ROOT

At ROOT, we believe caring for others begins by caring for the people who make that experience possible.

Inspired by the Japanese philosophy of pause and presence, ROOT was created as a place where guests can slow down, reconnect and return to self. We often describe our experience simply: inhale, exhale. Every detail, from the welcome they receive to the treatment they experience, is designed to help guests leave feeling lighter, calmer and more connected than when they arrived.

We believe that same philosophy should exist behind the scenes.

Our team is rooted in continuous learning, meaningful relationships and professional growth. We believe in recognizing people who demonstrate curiosity, consistency, kindness and a commitment to excellence. As ROOT grows, we want our team members to grow with us through clear opportunities for learning, increased responsibility and career development.

If you are looking for more than your next job, we would love to meet you.
