Position Summary

EYA, an award-winning residential developer and builder headquartered in Bethesda, MD, is seeking a strategic and dynamic Head of Purchasing to lead the company’s purchasing function.

This leader will be responsible for driving purchasing strategy across EYA’s residential communities, with a focus on continuous improvement, technology and data, cost management, value engineering, competitive bidding, trade partner relationships, and contracting strategy. Working closely with Construction, Architecture, Development, Accounting, and other teams, the Head of Purchasing will identifyopportunities to improve how EYA buys, builds, and manages costs while maintaining the quality, flexibility, and customer-focused approach that distinguishes EYA’s communities.

We are looking for more than an experienced purchasing professional. The successful candidate will be a proactive, relationship-oriented leader who combines strong construction and procurement expertise with the curiosity and drive to challenge existing processes, leverage technology, develop new trade relationships, and translate ideas into measurable results.

Responsibilities

  • Lead EYA’s purchasing function, establishing strategies and priorities that support the company’s operational and financial objectives.

  • Identify and implement process improvements that increase efficiency, strengthen controls, and enable the Purchasing team to operate more strategically.

  • Leverage technology, data, and automation to improve purchasing processes, analysis, reporting, bidding, contracting, and decision-making.

  • Partner cross-functionally to support new communities, resolve complex purchasing and construction issues, and improve coordination throughout the project lifecycle.

  • Develop and execute strategic sourcing, competitive bidding, and contracting strategies across EYA’s residential communities.

  • Champion cost management and value engineering efforts in partnership with Architecture, Construction, Development, and other stakeholders.

  • Monitor construction costs, market conditions, trade capacity, and cost variances to identify risks and opportunities and inform business decisions.

  • Drive measurable value through cost savings, negotiations, rebates, trade partnerships, and other strategic purchasing initiatives.

  • Build and strengthen relationships with subcontractors and suppliers while proactively expanding EYA’s trade partner network.

  • Lead contract negotiations to achieve competitive pricing, comprehensive trade coverage, clearly defined scopes of work, and strong business terms.

  • Demonstrate the highest standards of integrity and ethics, maintaining transparency, fairness, and objectivity in all vendor relationships, negotiations, and purchasing decisions.

  • Lead and develop the Purchasing team, fostering accountability, collaboration, and strong performance.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in business, construction management, engineering, finance, or a related field required.

  • Approximately 10 years of progressive experience within the construction, residential development, homebuilding, or general contracting industry, including at least 3 years in purchasing, procurement, estimating, preconstruction, or a closely related function.

  • Demonstrated ability to identify and implement process improvements, introduce new approaches, and successfully drive change.

  • Experience leveraging technology, data, and analytical tools to improve processes and support business decisions.

  • Strong knowledge of construction purchasing, estimating, bidding, contracting, scopes of work, cost management, and subcontractor negotiations.

  • Strong understanding of construction costs, market dynamics, trade relationships, and value engineering.

  • Strong financial and analytical capabilities, including the ability to analyze bids, budgets, cost variances, and purchasing performance.

  • Proven ability to build strong relationships and collaborate effectively across departments and with subcontractors, suppliers, and other external partners.

  • Excellent communication, negotiation, organizational, and problem-solving skills.

  • Self-directed, proactive, and comfortable balancing strategic priorities with the needs of a fast-moving, highly collaborative organization.
