What does a head of developer relations do?

A Head of Developer Relations leads the strategy and team responsible for building strong relationships between a company and the developer community. This role involves creating programs to engage developers, representing the company at events, gathering feedback to inform product development, and overseeing content and outreach initiatives. They typically manage developer advocates, work closely with product and engineering teams, and ensure that external developers have a positive experience with the company’s products and tools.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a head of developer relations?

To excel as a Head Of Developer Relations, you need a deep understanding of software development, community engagement, and strategic leadership, often supported by experience in engineering and technical advocacy. Regular collaboration involves attending sprint meetings, contributing to product roadmaps, and ensuring that documentation and SDKs meet developer needs. This cross-functional teamwork is essential for building trust with the community and driving product adoption.
