Head of Data Risk & Governance Oversight

Role Overview:

New York Life is seeking a strategic leader to serve as the Enterprise Data Governance Oversight Lead within Risk Management. This role sits at the center of the firm's continued evolution into a more data-driven organization, partnering with senior stakeholders to elevate how data is governed, managed, and leveraged across the enterprise.

As a second line leader reporting to the Head of Enterprise Risk Management, this individual will manage a small team to provide independent oversight, insight, and constructive challenge to the firm's data governance practices. The role partners closely with first line data leadership to drive governance maturity, while ensuring alignment with enterprise risk and regulatory expectations.

What You'll Do:

Provide independent oversight and thoughtful challenge of enterprise data governance strategy, framework, and execution

Assess the effectiveness of data ownership, stewardship, and accountability models across the enterprise

Lead independent assessments and validation activities to evaluate data governance frameworks, controls, and practices

Evaluate data quality, controls, and issue management practices, identifying opportunities to strengthen outcomes

Oversee data risk identification and reporting, ensuring meaningful insights are surfaced to leadership

Guide alignment with regulatory and policy expectations (privacy, retention, data use), balancing rigor with practical business needs

Partner with first line teams to shape strategy and improve governance maturity, without directly owning execution

Deliver clear, actionable insights to senior management and governance committees on data governance effectiveness, risks, and priorities

What You'll Bring:

10+ years in data governance, data management, or risk oversight

Experience in second line, governance, or control functions

Experience establishing or overseeing enterprise data governance programs in large, complex organizations

Knowledge of relevant frameworks and regulations, including DCAM, AI governance, data privacy, and data management regulatory expectations preferred

Ability to influence, advise, and challenge senior stakeholders

Insurance, financial services or regulated industry experience preferred

Familiarity with AWS/GCP cloud stack, incl. Data Platforms (like DataBricks, RedShift etc). and Data Governance tools (like Atlan, Anomalo etc.)

Pay Transparency

Salary Range: $185,000-$264,500 

Overtime eligible: Exempt

Actual base salary will be determined based on several factors but not limited to individual's experience, skills, qualifications, and job location. Additionally, employees are eligible for an annual discretionary bonus. In addition to base salary, employees may also be eligible to participate in an incentive program.
