Harmony School (www.harmonyschool.org) a small Pre K–12 independent school in Bloomington, Indiana that is focused on democratic, whole-child education, seeks a permanent teacher (certification not required) for our 5th & 6th grade classroom. This role involves co-designing and teaching a dynamic, interdisciplinary curriculum that fosters curiosity, critical thinking, and a love of learning in a team-teaching setting. The teacher will support students’ academic, social-emotional, and environmental growth, guiding them through a key developmental stage in a supportive classroom community.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Develop and teach integrated lessons for small class sizes in core subjects such as language arts, mathematics, science, and social studies. Differentiate instruction to meet varied learning styles and abilities, and vary instruction with project-based and experiential learning opportunities across subject areas. Learning should be engaging, relevant, and fun.
  • Cultivate students’ self-awareness, empathy, and responsibility for community through consistent, positive guidance and by serving as a positive role model. Teach and practice non-violent conflict resolution, helping students utilize mistakes as opportunities to grow and learn responsibility. Respond calmly and effectively in high-pressure or emergency situations, prioritizing safety and clear communication.
  • Communicate regularly with parents, guardians, and staff coordinators about student progress and classroom activities.
  • Collaborate with colleagues to plan interdisciplinary projects and school-wide initiatives. Participate in professional development, staff meetings, and school events. Be ready to volunteer and assist in other duties as needed to support the overall functioning of the school.
  • Interact with students of all ages (3-18 years olds).

Position Requirements:

  • Alignment with the vision, mission, and values of Harmony School. Maintain a positive, hard-working, and professional attitude and contribute to a collaborative school culture. Be ready and eager to work in the “family atmosphere” of Harmony, where members of all ages learn from one another.
  • Ability to work independently and take initiative while remaining receptive to feedback and direction from supervisors and co-workers. Be self-motivated, resourceful, and committed to continual learning.
  • Strong organizational and time-management skills with exceptional attention to detail and follow-through. Ability to manage multiple priorities while remaining calm, organized, and solution-oriented in high-pressure or emergency situations.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills with a warm and welcoming demeanor. Ability to build natural rapport with children and adolescents and maintain a steady, grounded presence in the school environment.
  • Demonstrated curiosity and enthusiasm for learning about democratic education and Harmony’s educational philosophy. Willingness to learn and use new technologies and systems. Commitment to progressive education, experiential learning, and working with diverse learners in a community-oriented environment.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Education or a related field preferred. Valid Indiana teaching license preferred but not required.
  • Minimum of two years of teaching experience, preferably with upper elementary or middle grades.
  • Strong classroom management, communication, and collaboration skills.
  • Proficiency with Google Workspace and student information systems (SIS) preferred. Familiarity with the Harmony School community is a plus.
