What is a hardware test engineer?

Hardware Test Engineers are professionals responsible for evaluating and verifying the functionality, reliability, and quality of electronic hardware components and systems. They design and execute tests to ensure products meet industry standards and specifications. Their tasks include developing test plans, troubleshooting issues, and working closely with design and manufacturing teams to resolve hardware problems. Hardware Test Engineers play a crucial role in ensuring that electronic products perform as intended before they reach consumers.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a hardware test engineer?

To thrive as a Hardware Test Engineer, you need a solid background in electronics, circuit analysis, and test methodologies, usually supported by a degree in electrical engineering or a related field. Familiarity with test automation tools, oscilloscopes, logic analyzers, and certifications such as ISTQB or Six Sigma are valuable assets. Long Description

About the Job You Are Considering

Looking for somebody (engineer or technician) that can run Python scripts on low-level hardware interfaces.  Must be knowledgeable about hardware interfaces and have hardware troubleshooting skills.  Must be able to work independently and coordinate with various product teams.  The job will also involve providing weekly status and sharing information and best practices with other members of the teams.

Your Role

  1. Scope clarity
  • Develop, maintain, and debug Python-based hardware validation scripts for board-level and interface-level testing.
  • Translate hardware requirements into executable test procedures and pass/fail criteria.
  1. Interface and lab skills (explicitly list)
  • Hands-on with interfaces like UART/RS-422/RS-485, SPI, I2C, GPIO, Ethernet/CAN (as relevant).
  • Comfortable using oscilloscopes, logic analyzers, DMMs, power supplies, and signal generators.
  1. Debugging expectations
  • Root-cause failures across script logic, firmware, and hardware bring-up issues.
  • Perform triage with clear issue isolation: test setup vs script defect vs hardware defect.
  1. Code quality expectations
  • Write maintainable, modular Python with logging, retries/timeouts, and robust error handling.
  • Use version control (Git), code reviews, and basic CI/test execution workflows.
  1. Traceability and documentation
  • Maintain requirement-to-test traceability and test evidence (logs, captures, summaries).
  • Document setup instructions, known failure modes, and reusable troubleshooting playbooks.
  1. Independence + ownership
  • Own test development from test design through lab execution and closure.
  • Proactively improve script reliability and test throughput.

Your Skills and Experience

  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Electronics Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, or a related technical discipline.
  • Strong proficiency in Python programming for hardware automation, validation, and test development.
  • Solid understanding of digital and embedded hardware systems, communication protocols, and board-level debugging techniques.
  • Hands-on experience with hardware test equipment and laboratory environments.
