Job Description:

Microchip Frequency & Time Systems (FTS) provides industry leading precision frequency and timing solutions, with products ranging from primary standard instruments to the world's first commercial Chip-Scale Atomic Clock. FTS products have applications from the ocean floor to satellites in space, in markets such as telecom, wireless, aerospace/defense, IT infrastructure and metrology industries. FTS's customers can build more reliable networks and systems by using the company's advanced timing technologies, atomic clocks, services and solutions.

Job Description:

Microchip FTS's Beverly, MA location is considering candidates for a position of Principal Engineer - Hardware in our Research and Development Engineering department. Suitable candidates will possess hands-on experience and expertise in development of control systems using Analog, Mixed Signal and Digital circuits with Embedded Microcontrollers. This position requires access to technology, materials, software or hardware that is controlled by the export laws of the United States. Candidates are required to provide proof of US citizenship or current permanent residency.

Responsibilities include:

Provide technical leadership for development of electronic systems to be utilized in next generation atomic clocks.

Liaise with Software and Mechanical Design Teams to ensure robust and producible product designs.

Provide FMA and other troubleshooting support to production on new and existing products

With the Hardware Engineering Manager, guide and mentor a focused group of electrical engineers on best practices for new product development and sustaining engineering

Develop and execute test and qualification plans for engineering prototypes

Design and capture schematics using the CAD suite, and work closely with the layout designer ensure a working and manufacturable design

Manage electrical designs in the Product Lifecycle Management tool Agile - entails creating bills of material and engineering change orders

Requirements/Qualifications:

  • Requires BS/MS Electrical Engineering and 10+ years of relevant experience in hardware design.
  • Requires a complete understanding of analog designs such as active filters and control loops.
  • Requires a strong knowledge of Mixed Signal circuits and Data Converters.
  • Must have knowledge of the physical layer of digital interfaces such as USB, SPI and I2C.
  • Must possess proven ability to read and interpret documents such as engineering drawings, engineering electrical schematics, product and process specifications, Statements of Work (SOWs).
  • Proven ability to work in multi-disciplinary teams and interface well with peers and management in a corporate setting are required.
  • Must be adept at technical research and drafting of design reports.
  • Must have familiarity with Product Lifecycle Management (PLM) tools, specific experience using Agile is desired.
  • Experience with component selection for space applications with radiation requirements is desired
  • Programmable Logic (FPGA/CPLD) and HDL (VHDL/Verilog) design experience is preferred.
  • RF and Microwave synthesis knowledge is preferred.
  • Crystal oscillator design experience is preferred.
