Title: School Safety Guardian

Reports to: Pilot Director

Position type: 12 month position (Exempt)

Position Summary

This position is an armed School Safety Guardian position responsible for ensuring the safety, security, and welfare of all students, faculty, staff, and visitors in the assigned school; however, there shall be no law enforcement authority, except to the extent necessary to prevent or abate an active assailant incident (an individual actively engaged in killing or attempting to kill people in a confined and populated area) on New Beginnings High School premises.


Key Responsibilities

● Support NBHS by attending community service and outreach activities throughout the year.

● Ensure New Beginnings High School is in compliance with all local, state and federal rules and regulations.

● Use whatever force is necessary to prevent or abate an active assailant incident.

● Conduct perimeter and inner school checks to ensure premises are secure.

● Analyze information and situations regarding activities that may be in violation of school policies.

● Collaborate with other school and district personnel, and representatives of local law enforcement agencies.

● Inform personnel, parents and/or visitors of school policies and procedures to ensure compliance with policies and guidelines.

● Investigate unusual incidents (e.g., unauthorized visitors, violent threats against students).

● Monitor students within a variety of school environments (e.g., rest rooms, grounds, hallways, library, cafeteria, parking lots, etc.).

● Prepare and report on a variety of security-related documentation (e.g., security logs, memos, letters, procedures, etc.)

● Read and respond to email communications.

● Recommend policies, procedures and/or actions to ensure the efficiency of campus security.

● Refer observation and incidents (e.g., injuries, altercations, suspicious activities, violations of rules) to appropriate instructional, administrative, and/or law enforcement personnel for follow-up action.

● Use and monitor surveillance technology.

● Operate metal detectors and conduct appropriate searches as needed.

● Provide support in school and district emergency situations and participate in all school emergency drills (e.g., fire, lockdown, active shooter, hostage).

● Assist with cleaning and sanitizing all common areas that are frequently visited by NBHS staff and customers.

● Provide excellent customer service.

● Ensure that all visitors and customers are following NBHS safety guidelines.

● Support all NBHS staff and customers in both face-to-face and virtual settings.

● Support school Mission by assisting with home visits.

● Conduct annual review and propose appropriate updates to the School Safety Guardian Reference& Procedures Manual.

● Performs other duties as assigned.


Minimum Qualifications

● Must possess a high school diploma (or equivalency)

● Must be 21 years of age or older

● Excellent written and verbal communication skills

● Valid Florida driver's license, reliable transportation and valid automobile insurance

● Must obtain a State of Florida (s 790.06 Florida Statues) concealed weapons permit, and maintain the permit throughout employment in this position

● Must be able to successfully complete ongoing trainings, and firearm proficiency test as outlined in the Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School Public Safety Act

● Must meet all Polk County Sheriff’s Office requirements to obtain a #Guardian# appointment pursuant to the Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School Public Safety Act and maintain the#Guardian# appointment throughout employment in this position

● Must successfully complete a 144 hour comprehensive firearms safety proficiency training during a Criminal Justice Standards and Training Commission certified course conducted by PolkCounty Sheriff’s Office

● Must pass a psychological evaluation

● Must complete at least 12 hours of a certified nationally recognized diversity training

● program

● Must submit and successfully pass a comprehensive employment background check, psychological evaluation, and drug screening

● Must hold and maintain a valid Florida Driver’s license during employment in this position

Periodically checks emails and phone messages after hours and on the weekend. Urgent work-related email and phone messages should be answered after 1-2 hours of receipt.


Physical Environment

Requires working indoors and outdoors. Requires sitting, standing, walking, bending, stooping, and climbing. Hearing and speaking to exchange information; seeing to read, prepare, and proofread documents; sitting for extended periods of time; dexterity of hands and fingers to operate office equipment; kneeling, bending at the waist, and reaching overhead, above the shoulders and horizontally ,to retrieve and store files and supplies; lifting light objects. The ability to lift, carry, move and/or position objects infrequently weighing up to 50 pounds. This position may require travel.
