Job description

The Market Strategy Director (MSD) is a senior leadership role responsible for setting and executing strategic growth initiatives within HDR’s Water Business Group. The MSD drives market expansion, organic growth, market penetration, and aligns marketing and business development efforts with corporate objectives.

Key Responsibilities Strategic Leadership & Market Development
  • Define and implement the WBG strategic growth plan to include business group market sectors and global geographies.
  • Lead development of integrated business strategies in coordination with market sector directors, business development leaders, and regional leadership.
  • Identify emerging markets, acquisition opportunities, and technology investments to maintain industry leadership.
  • Promote HDR’s full-service capabilities and brand presence in target markets.
  • Represent HDR in industry associations and maintain a visible leadership profile.
  • Partner with other business groups to promote cross‑business opportunities.
  • Represent the WBG on corporate strategic initiatives and drive the business group strategic plan.
Client Development & Business Growth
  • Develop overall growth strategy to increase HDR presence and industry leadership in target markets and geographies.
  • Oversee client capture strategy and pursuit planning processes for all sectors.
  • Build and maintain relationships with senior leadership in key client organizations.
  • Support major pursuits through strategy development and client engagement.
  • Monitor market performance indicators and adjust strategies to meet growth targets.
  • Support the Business Development Director in developing net fees booked (NFB) plans.
Staff Development
  • Develop and mentor market sector, client development, and marketing leaders.
  • Identify resource gaps and drive talent acquisition and succession planning.
  • Support a culture of collaboration and professional growth across teams.
Operational & Profitability Support
  • Support regional and area leadership to ensure delivery of excellence and profitability.
  • Monitor sector performance metrics and implement process improvements.
  • Support QA/QC programs and risk management on key projects.
  • Facilitate knowledge sharing and lessons learned across business groups.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Professional Engineer (PE) designation.
  • 20+ years of experience in strategic market development within the water industry.
  • Experience with international markets (Canada, EMEA, APAC).
  • Operations and project delivery experience.
Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering, architecture, or related field.
  • Minimum of 15 years of experience in strategic market development within engineering or related industries.
  • Proven success in business development, client relationship management, and pursuit strategies.
  • Experience leading cross‑functional teams and managing complex growth initiatives.
  • Strong industry presence and active participation in professional associations.
  • Commitment to HDR values and employee‑owned culture.
Benefits

Compensation ranges from $260,000 to $325,000 depending on skills, experience, education, and location.
