Job Title:         Groundskeeper

Reports to:      Facilities Manager

Nature of Work Summary:

The grounds keeper will through the use of a variety of tools and equipment maintain grounds including planting, cultivating, pruning, cutting grass, general clean up; and provide onsite leadership.  This employee will determine the care and treatment necessary to maintain grounds in good condition.  To ensure an attractive and orderly campus, some routine services concerning the selection, placement, care, and treatment of plants, trees, or grass may be referred to a nursery dealer or professional lawn care service.  Limited supervision is given.  This employee serves as a lead worker in providing direction to crew members and volunteers.  Performance is inspected and evaluated on the basis of campus grounds appearance.

Examples of Work (other related duties may be assigned):

  • Supervise all lawn care, including:
    • Trimming and edging.
    • Prune shrubs and trees.
    • Remove damaged leaves and branches.
    • Spray lawns, plants, and trees with fertilizer, herbicides, and pesticides (may be subcontracted), with required certification.
    • Clean grounds, remove litter, dump trash.
    • Rake and dispose of leaves.
    • Water lawn, trees, and shrubs.
    • Perform grounds duties using mowers equipped with attachments such as lawn roller and aerator.
  • Submit cost estimates for labor, material, and repairs.
  • Keep records of inventory and maintenance expenses.
  • Train crew members and volunteers.
    • Assign work to crew members.
    • Coordinate the efforts of crew members and volunteers.
    • Provide leadership to crew members and volunteers.
    • Instruct crew members and volunteers on safety procedures.
  • Must be available to work outside in all weather conditions. Work hours including nights, weekends, and holidays.
  • Minor sprinkling adjustments with desired knowledge of the irrigation system.
  • Snow and ice management
    • Manage subcontractors for snow removal
    • Snow removal from walkways/sidewalks
    • Salt application on walkways/sidewalks 
  • Assist with minor maintenance needs within district
  • Work with the Athletic Department to prepare facilities for sports event
    • Trash empties
    • Tennis facility clear of debris on courts and surrounding grounds.
    • Take appropriate care of the stadium turf.
    • Baseball/Softball knowledge and execution for maintenance and full game preparation on all fields. 
    • Fields lined sharply for soccer, lacrosse, track/field and football.
    • Netting for all fields taken down, stored properly for the season.
    • Windscreens for stadium, tennis and baseball/softball removed and stored for winter. 

Knowledge and Skills

  • One year experience in grounds maintenance.
  • Working knowledge of planting, pruning, lawn care and irrigation system.
  • Skills to operate heavy power equipment.
  • Ability to use, sharpen, and make minor repairs to tools and equipment.
  • Ability to follow oral and written instructions.
  • Ability to conform to an established work schedule.
  • Ability to communicate in a concise and effective manner.
  • Knowledge of grounds, maintenance tools, materials, and safe work practices.
  • Effective interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to manage volunteers.

Suggested Training and Experience:

Education:  High School diploma.

Licenses:  Valid Michigan driver's license.

Other:  One year experience in grounds maintenance (preferred)
